Me vs '03 330ci vs '97(or 98) Formula Trans Am

wow u guys....wow, what a night...I was on my way home from the gas station and a 97 or a 98 (i cant remember what the guy said) Formula Trans Am pulls up. So, I put the window down and say whassup & start chattin w/ the guy. He was really cool. Anyway he asks if I race and I said naw I just got the car (well, its used tho) ...and he was like "oh ok"....and the light turned green and i was like "you kno what, why not lets see what happens lol" and he smiles and says go so we take off. One mistake was that I had the VSA on...secondly, I didnt use SS, and thirdly, I didn't hit near redline because to be honest, I was pretty scared since i JUST bought the car so yea. Anyway, we take off at about a 25mph roll and he gets a jump and as soon as we get to about 90mph he lets off as do I, and at that point, I was about 1 to 1.5 cars behind him. So, I was pretty fuckin surprised and as soon as we slowed to the next red light he was shocked and said "damn man that fucker has BALLS!! My car's got 300hp etc etc...Good race man" and I say goodnight and take off...

1 Loss

Next opponent: '02 BMW 330ci pulls up and I didn't want to race at all...so the light turns green and I'm cruisin and I look over and its 2 guys and all of a sudden he takes off. So I'm like.....wtf? I catch up to him at the next red light. This time, I turn off the VSA and use SS. Light turns green, we both slowly cruise to 25mph and all of a sudden he takes off again. Right away I jump the gun and within a second I'm ahead of him. By the time I hit 90mph I let off and i was a good 5-10 car lengths ahead of him and as I looked in the rear view mirror as I was braking he put the brakes on nice and hard so that he wouldn't be next to me due to shame. I turn the corner and he starts cruisin super slow so I take off.

1 Win

So thats my story of the night. I know I shouldn't have done it, but I just got the car and I hadn't tested the cars limits yet and I was very anxious. I never street race so that surprised the hell out of me that I actually went through 2 races. I hope not to street race in the future !!

You have a 2001 CL-S, right?
Even if you just got it why didn't you want to go? If it's a 2001 I would assume it's already broken in

reason why I didn't want to race was because..

1) I JUST bought the car and didnt want to do anything stupid yet

2) I don't like street racing

3) There tends to be a lot of cops around my area

yeah completely bone stock with 50k miles on her. I just bought her 2 days ago . Coming from a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally to this is a HUGE improvement. But yea I straight murdered that 330ci. The kid was young who was driving, so perhaps he sucks at driving? I figured he'd atleast stay with me most the way ? But thanks!

If the 330 has an auto & a passenger it won't be faster than a 5A CL-S. 7 car lengths @ 90 mph seems like a lot though- unless the guy had no idea how to launch an auto.

about whether or not he was racing me, yes he was cuz he floored it both times b4 me. As for the car, I was not sure if it was a 328 or 330ci, and I should have clarified that earlier. But it was one or the other, not a 325. And also as I mentioned in the previous post it was prolly more like 5-7, atleast 5 though. Also, yes he did have 1 extra passenger and I do believe he wasnt that great of a driver. So I'm not forgetting those things. It he lost the passenger & was a better driver it would have been a much better race, I'm sure.

there is a big diff in a 97 and 98 Trans Am. those were the years they swtiched from the LT1 block to the LS1. ratings went from 285 to 300+ hp, depending on year and trim.

either the LT4, or LS1.. the LS1 has always put out 350hp though in the corvette. the LT4 was the LT1-era Corvette engine while the LT1 was Z28/Trans Am. then in 98, they put LS1's in the Z28, Trans Am, and Corvette.

edit: the 97 Corvette was the first C5, which had the first LS1 as well. T/As and Camaros had to wait a year

hmm.. 1.5 cars on a mid 14 second CL-S sounds like a stock LS1. he probably had the 98 Ram Air. even though it IS infact a "corvette engine" its still not nearly as powerful as the Corvette. the Corvette has been 350 since 97, and the 98 Trans Am w/ the Ram Air was right around 320 i think. he mightve said 300 just to be simple about it , or he had an LT1 which was right around 305 horses in 1996. either way, SEXY FUCKING CAR

fbodies are my life

"F-body" refers to Camaros, and all Firebirds (Trans Ams). i really dont know what engine he had definitely, so i cant tell you if you really held up, but ill tell you. haha an acura holding less than 2 cars behind ANY 4th Generation Trans Am is pretty damn good by me

the 1993 Trans Am, with the 275hp LT1 automatic ran 14.2 bone stock. and they only got faster every year. by 98 the 6 spd ran 13.3~13.6 i believe. whats the CL? low 14s?

that's gm's ratings game. wouldn't look good if the camaro had the same ratings as the vette. the differences however are very slight, and when you put them on the dyno, know that the numbers are going to be very, very close, stock v stock; and that most f bodies out there are at least wearing a cold air and catback which gets them into the low 300s on rear wheel hp, same place the vettes are.

across the board improvements in 01 helped both models, with a better intake (on motor) and many cars seeing 315 stock rwhp.

I can't say for sure, but the 97 formula my brother has lt1 doesn't make my cl-s look bad, however my 99ss (ls1) or my brothers 99 ta really does, even on a roll to 90; and just forget about it from there on up.

The advantage the vette does have in stoplight to stoplight is it's weight, about 200-300 lbs depending on model; however, the IRS doesn't get the power down quite as easy so the cars are actually pretty close.

For comparison here's our real world experience for average runs at atco raceway in new jersey, some slightly better, some slightly worse with each car.

LT1s
stock 97ss auto ran 13.7@101
95 ta 6 spd (cold air, cat back) ran 13.8@103 (traction)
97 z28 (cold air, muffler) auto, highway gears 13.7@100
97 formula (cold air, catback) auto, 13.7@100 [current]

stangs
95 GT, (full exhaust, cold air, maf, tb, advanced timing 100k mi) 14.2@97
97 cobra (exhaust, k&n) 13.7@103

LS1s
99 t/a 6spd (free mods, cold air, headers, catback) 12.9@111 [current]
99 ss auto (free mods, cold air, drag radials) 12.9@109 [current]

and i believe the vette is a tad lighter than the fbodies also, at about 3200 lbs as opposed to the camaros 3500 +/-
