Maybe I should trade in my CLS for a 2002 Camaro SS or Firebird WS6.....

Just thinking things through tonight while I was out driving and these are some of the things I thought of:

+Last year the Camaro/Firebird will ever be made is '02 (for a while, if ever).
+Much easier to mod to get incredible performance.
+Don't have to feel screwed when Nissan/Toyota/Mistu brings out a car with 240/260 hp, because none of that shit could touch me.
+Nothing under $30k quite as fun to drag race around town as a V8 f-body.
+Already has tons of mod support (even superchargers) compared to the limited modability of the CLS.
+Parts can take much higher hp/torque numbers.
+No more slushbox SS shifting that supposedly can't be tweaked to shift sharper right now (I actually tried SS tonight. It's been a while. I was shocked to see how long after I moved the stick the thing finally shifted.)
+And I can even get it in the nice dark blue color and it'll look pretty sweet.

-Lack of luxury.
-Rear wheel drive sucks in wet weather.
-Interior isn't as comfy or nice.

I guess I'm just having one of those moods where I think I picked the wrong car.
I see people in Camaros/Mustangs, etc, and I wish I could compete with that. I wish I could race them.

And having driven my dad's '97 Z28 a lot I know how nice it is to have that wall of torque squish you into the seat as you watch the speedometer needle sweep quickly across the faceplate. I miss the raw power.

I mean I still love the CLS, but I yearn for more power.

I don't want to waste $5,000 (or however much it will cost) on the Comptech supercharger if/when it comes out only to find out it's gonna kill my engine/tranny in a year. Plus it won't be only $5,000. It'll end up being like $7-8,000 because I'd need to get headers and stronger tranny parts most likely. And I don't even have that kind of money.

Besides, let's face it, the CLS ain't meant for modding.

And me being a speed addict, I don't know if I'm getting a big enough fix from the CLS.

Anyone else get similar feelings sometimes?

Well, at least you know that a CL wasn't meant to be a ballistic land rocket......I knew what I was getting into, a nice, quiet luxury/sport coupe, good looks, lots of features, relatively quick for not too much money.

Fbodies aren't so cheap anymore either....a descently loaded SS Camaro with a few SLP toys can break the $30k mark fairly easy.

2 different cars, with very different missions.

Don't forget to the cost of the dumpster you'll be pushing it after it falls apart. What a piece of cr@p those cars are. I have rented both on several occasions and they shake rattle and roll more than Bill Haley and the Comets.

For all you youngins, that was a rock and roll band back in the olden days.

Why not consider the 2001 Mustang Cobra?

Ford finally got the true HP rating in them. I'm not a big magazine racer, but Car and Driver managed to granny shift a new Cobra to a 13.5 sec 1/4 mile.

Expect to see low 13's at the track, bone stock.

(And the 2001 Cobra is a bona fide sports car w/IRS, which is not something that can be said for the live axle F-bodies.)

The SVT Mustang was the car I was going to get before all the HP problems and suspension of the 2000 model production.
The independent rear suspension and Cobra engine are pretty sweet. And there are tons of aftermarket parts.

Then I decided on the CLS since there was really nothing else in that price range that compared.

I am about to go check the 2001 SVT Mustang. If a good deal pops up, I'll get it.

One of the main reasons why I bought the CL-S is because of its beautiful interior. In fact, it was the nicest interior I ever sat in (under $50k), even nicer than the BMW (just my opinion). I agree, it's nice to have raw power every now and then. But, I could care less about what cars I can/cannot beat, because I'm the one driving my car every day, therefore a nice interior is a must for me And we can beat a majority of the cars out there, with luxury and style...

yeah, i'd go for the cobra too over the f-bod...fords engines/drivetrains seem much more refined in my opinion-take the smooth little 4.6 in the GT for example. i looked at a cobra briefly, but i couldn't stand the fake grille openings and scoops (WTF?), and the interior plastic and seats just suck!!

get a motorcycle. they will beat anything out there, including a corvette, rustang, whatever. and you can say "all i have is 100hp and i just kicked your ass". you do 0-60 in about 3-4 sec, depending on your bike and how good of a rider you are. 1/4 mile in about 10-11 sec, as well.

Not to mention Ford has been using a SOHC v8 in the latest Mustang GT's (98 n up?), while the SVT Cobra gets a DOHC v8!!! Very nice. Power output could be better but at least they finally learned a lesson in head technology and less moving parts equals less stress on an engine. GM's??? Still the Dinosauric OHV Pushrods, and what is it, two or three valves per cylinder? Even ford is still guilty of that I believe.

In anycase, Ford is finally pushing foward, updating, and striving to evolve and change, where as GM is well, stagnant and being put out to pasture (Evolve or die...good riddens Camaro/Firebirds).

Do NOT trade your car. My mom has a 99 Z28 and its a POS. The build quality in the CL is far better than the chevy. My moms Z28 is falling apart. Don't get me wrong I was deciding between the CL-S or a SLP Firehawk, but I choose the CL-s over the bird. No regrets!

Not trying to debate that this matter, just adding to it.

But DOHC muti-valve heads are not new. The first one was built and used in 1912... Hardly 'New' technology...

Exactly, I'm very happy with this car, but there are those times that I wish I would've gotten a Supra TT, a much faster car that's easier to mod too. If they still made new Supras, I would've gotten one instead of the CL-S. I didn't want the headaches that tend to come with used cars.

I sold my 99 Camaro SS and got a Mitsubishi Galant LS. Nice car, but too small and not enough power. I traded that car in and got the CL-S. Totally different class of car.

BTW, I loved the SS. 0-60 was 4.9 seconds and I could easily run a 13.6 with no mods and a 100lb stereo. The LS1 alluminum block engine is bullet proof and the tranny is awesome. I never had a single problem with the car in the 2 years and 25K miles that I raced everything in sight. I was only beat once and that was by a new vette.

Anyways, the car was awesome... there were only a few things that bugged me about the car including the huge doors that you have to be careful with, minor rattles (although the CL-S rattles even more with only 2500 miles on it), ride confort is fine if the trip is less that an hour or so, of course the car can fly! I made it from Sacramento city limits to LA city limits in 3 hours and 57 minutes, of course, I had to fill up for gas 3 times on the 367 mile trip.

I got rid of the car because I am getting married and that car alone gets more looks in 1 week than in 3 months with the CL-S. Women love it and trust me, the'll do just about anything if you let them drive it

Out of all the cars I have owned, it was definitely the most fun to drive, day in and day out! After two years, I still loved to drive it- I've never had that feeling before. Thankfully, the person I sold it to works here and he'll let me drive it if I ask.

BTW people- don't comepare a stock Z28 to an SS. It is an entirely different ride. A Z28 floats like a boat and an SS sticks to the ground like wet tar. I could easily take a 90 degree turn in the SS at 70 mph without even a screech of the tires... A Z28 would roll around the same turn until tire grip was non existant.

Mustangs can't hold a candle to the SS, sorry ford guys!

The torque of a V8 engine...what a wonderful rush! In regards to Ford(Cobra) vs Chevy (SS) no offense taken. Chevy did the right thing in putting the LT1 Corvette engine in the Camaro. It's fast from factory. I wish Ford would sell prodution Mustangs with the Windsor 351 V8, then it would be an even match up. But that's Ford for you.

Keep the CL-s and spend 10k on a used GN that will still smoke the firebirds and camaros. I have a 1986 near stock that will run high 12's...

Quick Reply: Maybe I should trade in my CLS for a 2002 Camaro SS or Firebird WS6.....
