May be time to sell cl...value?

well after having to get my 2nd tranny I am thinking of unloading my cl after the job is done.
My car is basically stock. I have 42000 miles, llumar tint, spoiler and new performance tires. Dealer offered 16,300 which is a joke to me...Car is clean...no dents, dings, oil changed regularly.
What do you think I could get for it ?

Yeah, maybe. Do a search on autotrader to see what 2001's with 42K miles are selling for in your area.

I've got 18K miles on my 6spd, and if I were to sell it today, I don't think I could expect to get more than 23K for it from a private sale, maybe 18-21K from a dealer (maybe). This is for a 2003 6spd.

I don't think that the dealers offer is out of the ballpark, maybe a little low, but not totally out there.

I did a quick search on 2001 CLS's within 50 miles of me w/ less the 45000 miles on autotrader. Here's the results:

Highest price: $21982 (acura certified)
Lowest price: $16900 (40K miles)
Average price: $19335

These are asking prices, so the dealers must have paid less for 'em. They gotta pay the bills somehow

Remember, cars are the worst investments you can make.

You're not going to come out ahead if you trade in your CL. The used car market sucks ass, and unfortunately, the CL has taken a beating due to its dicontinued status and known tranny issues.

If you want to get out, just do it. Maybe not settle for the dealer's offer, but I wouldn't expect anything over 18K on a sale.

You may as well keep the car at this point since you lost most of your value after the first year. Plus, you still have more then half of the drivetrain warranty left.

Figure in you have a coupe that had a tranny problem (x2) and is a discontinued model and you have a formula for a low resale. If dealers are getting an average of just over $19k... don't expect more then $18k on a private sale.. if you're lucky.

you should be HAPPY with $16,300 on trade, for a 2001? you think thats a joke? you must be kidding. people are barely getting that for 2002's anymore. yeah, life sucks, the car depreciated like a bitch, but what can you do? bite the bullet. its not going to get any better than $16,300

If you can get 17 or 17.5 for a trade in, then do it (IF YOU ARE BUYING A BRAND NEW CAR). The used car market sucks, so that may the best option instead of just waiting around. You REGAIN that few grand that you were hoping to get in a regular sale in the tax savings. Trading in for a new car is no different then selling your car used as long as they give you a reasonable trade in. Just remember you are only paying taxes on the balance.

Not true. Boats are a far worse investment. Maybe an airplane, too. :P

FYI

I just purchased my 2001 CL-P last month for $17,100 with 37k miles. Just to give you an idea on what they are going for.

From a dealer or an individual?

From a dealer. It was a pretty large nissan dealer here in NY, not a small fly by night dealer.

It was the only CL on the lot and they were pretty anxious to get rid of it. They originally wanted $19,999 sticker, but said they could do $18,000 even, but I talked them down to $17,100 +tax and walked out the door.

With the way values are going, I’ll be keeping my car for a loooooooooooong time.
When I do sell, the new owner will be able to put CLASSIC PLATES on this baby.

All depends on the demand in your area...

i.e. - Supra turbo's (MKIV) in the bay area still go for $20k for the past 5 years... Never drop below that...

i'm thinking that once the cl is more than 2 years old it will hold its value better and will not depreciate as fast. esp a 2 door acura

That's what I'm hoping too. I'm planning on keeping mine for awhile, but when I do get rid of it, I'd like to have some value left.

I don't think we've seen the bottom of the depreciation curve yet for the 2nd gens. Hopefully the curve will level out once the cars get into the low teens and stay there for a few years.

I'd love to have a $13k-14K car a few years down the road to trade in when/if Acura comes out with a AWD sports coupe
