A solo road race, Cones you do not have to hit... Best lowest time would win...
That kind of race... Best for such kind of races are ITR and S2000 not the CL/TL...

basically your in a big ass lot and their are cones set up and you have to complete it in the shorest time. speeds are usually under 60mph. Alot of turns and for autoX driver is more important than the car.

More examples, with a bit of description along the lines of race stories:

It's incorrect to say that the car matters little in autocrossing. It matters so much that there's a comprehensive set of categorization and modification rules for the cars. What is correct to say is that a driver has to be able to use the capabilities of the car to the fullest in order to do well. A well-performing car will not make up for a bad driver, unlike drag racing of any kind.
A good autocross car is typified by both agility and being able to put power effectively to the ground. The latter is usually the limiting factor, so monstrous amounts of power will only get one so far if you don't have well balanced abilities to make use of that power.

The 5-minute edit rule strikes again.
I guess no one made the claim that the car matters little. :P
Anyways, I forgot to make the point why autocrossing is relevent.
See, autocrossing is the only competition venue available for amateur enthusiasts to measure the handling capabilities of their street cars without requiring a bunch of safety equipment and/or certifications.
Solo competition (as opposed to Solo 2, which is just another name for the autocross we've been talking about), which is basically time trials on tracks, requires a roll cage to be installed in the car. As you know and might imagine, few street cars are equipped with roll cages, nor do most people want to cut up a nice interior to install one.
