This may start a DEBATE: Custom copycat?

Refer to this thread, page 7:

http://www.acura-cl.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134987

my comments:

Why would you do that??? MTkBiKer, why would you want nearly an exact replica of someone else's interior? That design is so similar it is ridiculous. The idea of doing system's and interior "custom" work is not to have the exact thing done. I may be in the wrong here, but you should be ashamed!

he can have the performance mods-but did you consider with that setup he nearly did the same as XXKRazyXX car too? I guess if its not enough to bitch about then I will shut up..but I took so much time to be original that it is a little upsetting to see it repeated.

First off...it really sucks when people copy your orignal work almost to the T....however I would not sweat it your car is very nice and is published in a well known magazine.

once again you are right mattg...but i guess when you look at the overall picture it becomes more disturbing. All I am trying to advocate is that custom work should be exactly that-custom. I would never try to copy any idea in particular, in fact the arm rest/button idea and where to place the guages was a something that took me a long time to consider: it had to be somewhere that i could see and feel the guages and buttons but not be on the A-pillar or glove compartment or in all the other played out or unoriginal areas.

To MR.Steve: this is not an argument of whose is better, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but merely a question of ethics perhaps?

Sorry AcurajL if some of my interior pieces bother you. But I did not mean any disrespect. However we are pretty limited as to what can be done in a coupe with fiberglass. You car is definitely original for a CL, but this type of style of fiberglass visor monitors is nothing new. I know you have seen MANY car with visors like ours before you even had your CL, I know I have.
Once again, I did not mean to take away from your ride or chap your hide. As for similarities, you're right we both have fiberglassed screens in our cars and you had yours done before I ever got up the motivation to take my car to that level.
But now for some differences between the setups:
Our trunks are completely different. Along with the fiberglassed LCD.
You have custom speakerpods, I let mine rest in the stock locations. You run Alpine, I don't. There are BIG design differences in our rear pieces. You have digital gagues, I run autometer. You mount you Nitrous inside the ride. I don't have a TL kit or neon under car. We run different wheels. I live in AZ you live in FL. My car has never been in a competition, you have trophies.
I don't want to start a flame war with you, so once again I am sorry if the similarities on my interior bother you. This was not my intention, I just did what I wanted to get my car to where I wanted it. Not a judge and not the members of this board. If anything I assume you did the same and if so then we share similar good tastes. But the are plenty aspects of your ride that remain unique and I don't think it is worth getting upset about. Its not like we'll ever even see one and another at a meet.
And in closing, everything that I have on my car or have done to my car can be found another another CL on this board. I know Andy and we have talked many times, I respect his ride as well as yours. The car has had this pieces for about 7 months, so I assume this was the first time you saw it. I give you respect for pioneering this. I also meant no disrespect to any other members who share similar designs.

Question of Ethics? Puuuleeeeese...we aren't talking about selling nuke secrets...it's just a car...you need to relax.

You act as if you're the first person to ever customize your ride. Get in line dude...there were thousands of peeps doing it before you. You got your ideas from somewhere too.

Be flattered & move along. Next time try something that's a bit tougher to do if you're so worried about someone biting your shit.

Mtbiker: Any way you slice it, it took a lot of time & effort to get done & it is not a carbon-copy. Be proud of your shit dude.

We all have the same car.

There are going to be similarities as far as mods go.

Tha same thing happened with EssurakHout and XXKRazyXX.

This thread did not mean to put MtkBikR in the hot seat, he was merely an example to a perfectly good debate. When is taking custom designs, ideas that someone else created too far? I think his response was fair and apologetic regardless of the necessity. Even some things on my car are not my own idea but each one that isnt I have put my own twist on. Its about "customization", not standardization, so to copy wheels, rims, comptech drop is a matter of purchasing them and installation. But to customize you must buy the equipment, regardless of the same manufacturer and installing them in a unique matter.

MikeBTR has a nice car and if someone was to do what i did to my car, like the grille and skirt modification, i would lead them in the right direction. I'd tell them about the problems i had and give them pointers to make their job easier. this is a car club and there are so many members with the same car so I can hear AcuraJL's side of the story too, but damn, it's not like a business copying another business and hurting sales. this is just about you and your car, and nobody can tell you what to do to it, (except the dealer when it's leased). so enjoy your car however you like it. So now you know and knowing is half the battle. right Duke?

Am I the only one who really feel AcuraJL?

If I put in a decent amount of time and money to make my car stands out of the crowd, all of the sudden, there is another car that looks like mine shows up, it would bother the heck out of me.

You guys know me. I tried new things and created templates to show other ppl how to get things done. I don't really care if others do what I did just because my car does not stand out and it's a nice thing to share. However, owning a unique car is a pride that you do not want to share with anyone.

I am not bashing MtBikR because I have no proof that he copied AcuraJL's design even though the pieces look similar. I would only say MtBikR should have search around to avoid building a car that is similar to others' cars so his would stand out by itself since he dropped a lot of time and money into it.

AcuraJL and I have discussed with one another our views via pm and I think this is pretty much cleared up. I told him that I am a 25 year old stockbroker with too much disposable income and that he would not be seeing my car in a magazine anytime soon. He was very sensible and I hope I came across the same as well. We discussed what aspects were similar and I explained how ergonomics and limited space on a stock dash tend to lead to similar installations. When it comes down to it, I live in Tucson,AZ where you'd be lucky to find a speed shop let alone a car show. My car is modified to fit my desire for speed and high quality A/V uses, that's it. It won't be in a car show in the forseeable future, but it will be seen in the next few months at the track.
So now that this is pretty much all over, will you fuckers start to get my name right??:P
