M3 and Cl-s

Just wondering, how much power and how much mods would a stock CL-S need to be even with stock m3.
Please list

Thanks

A properly supercharged 6MT CL-S should be able to keep up with an M3.

it will never keep up around a track.

in a straight line i could beat an M3 in the 1/4. that's with i/h/e/p chip and nitrous.

The auto guys with the S/C and HBP are trapping the same 1/4 mph (~106mph) ...so, from a roll, we should be dead even with the M3. From a stop their published 1/4 times are a few tenths faster (due to better traction off the line).

On a track with a couple twisties I doubt we have a chance in hell.

You'd need to make about 310hp to the wheels I think to actually beat one.

you'd be surprised. all you really need is a SCed hbp cls with headers and some pullies. for suspension, a drop with good adjustable shocks, sway bars and sticky tires. a tower bar could help a bit too. that should keep you close to an m3. remember that there are plenty of m drivers that cant drive their cars to full potential. but then again, im sure alot cls owners dont push the car to its full potential!
ive ran against an m3, and we were dead even all through third, and this was with low fuel pressure and the car was running like shit!

You have a good point. A bad driver can lose even if in a faster car. My post was more directed towards ultimate potential of the cars.

I think it's safe to say that everyone is talking about the current 2001-present model.

I am thinking of getting an older M3 Convertible (and manual trans) for a summer-only car.
Just starting to research this.
Is there a good M3 site with helpful people?
Any years to stay away from?

well, the E46 model is heavier, but has more horsepower.

IMO, no, a cl-s can't keep up with an M3 as long as the driver skill is there.

Anyone can mash the gas, but the m3's sweet spot sits right between 4,000 and 6,800. That power band is awesome.

E46 M3 > A-CL-Type-S.

I've driven both and i feel that the CL is definately more comfortable. But the M3 is a drivers car.

Give me a 1/4 mile of straight pavement and i'll take 95% of all stock M3's out there.

He wasn't asking if a stock CLS could keep up with an M3. I think that comparison has an obvious winner. He wanted to know how many CLS mods it would take to be as fast or faster than the beemer.

If you don't get your launch down perfectly you'll need a little more straight pavement to catch up...unless that intercooler is in already.

I raced a silver M3 driven by some kid a while back, and I kept up with him. He was pissed, and took off going like 90+ in 50. Bad sportsmanship, if you will say. I don't think it was a stick, because I didn't hear him shifting. Probably SMG.

I find a lot of BMW drivers to be dickheads. I don't race them unless I really want to, because otherwise, it's excuses after excuses if the lose, and cockiness if they win. I don't want to deal with that bullshit. They can go suck each other's dick.

i think its fair to say that the avg m3 runs between 13.4-13.6, there is one with a crazy skilled driver that has gone 12.8 bone stock, i've seen the slips

their huge advantage over our cars is off the line because the m3 launches soo clean, i believe a stock m3 puts down 270-280 to the wheels so from a roll i bet a 6 speed cl-s with all the bolt ons, i/h/e/p clutch and fly wheel would be right on the bimmers back bumper

My friend had a 530i when I was NA w/ all the bolt-ons and he was absolutely sure he'd hand me my ass. Hmmm, weighs more with less HP but can still beat me? He took the loss so personally he traded it in and got a new 545. Nice car but still can't beat me since I've upped the ante. Now he needs an M5 and I need an intercooler!
