Luckiest guy in the world with a CLS :(( ( Part 2)

I was in trouuble this night, we were almost killed... sort of .....

As every one is aware.. I am driving with 1 stock rim and 3 18" konig rims.

The bad news is that I was driving fast on a ramp and... the unimaginable happend, I lost my back (side with least traction, of course the stock rim) as I as comming out of the ramp at high speed, I did not even had chance to look if the VSA saved my... I was skidding sideways in the ramp and I was battling to correct the oversteer ...and ... I hit the curb from front.... We were okay but I was sure that I hit hard and somthing was fucked up... driving the CLS immediately revealed that it is out of balance...

Quick Inspection revealed the following damages:

1) The driver side front 18" got 1" bend from inner side of the rim.

2) Minor bulge, do not konow if this is because of the bent and it would go away when the rim is fixed or tire need to be replaced?

3) The towing hook get bend 45 degrees.

4) Minor scrapes in the underling plastics

I spent some 1-2 hr, removing the damaged wheel, got a hammer from wallmart and Protective leather and tried to strighten the bend as much as I can so I can drive the CLS.

The lesson learned from this incident is that first do not drive a CLS with mixed tires/wheels it is not safe. VSA may not help too much.

First thing to do tommorrow:

1) get the rim fixed ASAP. Does anyone knows a good place to fix a rim in MA/NH ?
2)Inspect the tire if there is a bulge torne steal belts, I will replace it otherwise I will live with it. What do you think?

Finally, I guess, I need all of you to wish me the best luck ....

I thank my Creator for coming out of this safe and sound.

That is some crazy ass $hit, i hope that never happens again to anyone here. B/c it would be a tradgedy to read about a fellow Cl.com person to loose their life. Glad it was just the rim that was hurt.

I am going to have to go searching. I think the VSA gets brain damage with mixed rubber.

I will look for part I -- what happened to Mr. Nitto? Boy I leave for a bit and it's like I missed an earthquake!

Sorry, to hear about the damage, at least your safe.

You had the angels looking out for you...

I looked at your earlier post now -- got it.

You should have the tires inspected (up close and personal). If an engine blows, you just stop, if the tire blows... well, it could be really bad (VSA or not).

I'm not so sure about the pounding on the rim deal. Did I get this right -- you pounded on the rim? You do NOT want to use it again *OR* you want to make sure you tell a wheel repair service to inspect it (and tell them about your mini fix-up repair to the rim).

The thing that is no nasty about the different tire on a left or right side of the car is human factors. You get used to the new cornering power on a right turn, then expect (by human nature) to expect the same from the left, but now you have the makings of total understeer. Those Nittos must be at least twice as sticky as the stock tires (depending on surface), so when the rear stock tire got loaded, it just did a "fast break" on you. (Sliding resistance is lower).

Go back to the tire/wheel dealer -- please make sure that all the tires and wheels are inspected and if you need to, get a second opinion if your intuition says to. (Your life is too important.) (Yes, it's just my 2 cents, but the suspension and brakes are just too important)

BTW -- it is nice to be able to get a flat-bed tow. Did they not have one for you?

The expression, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger comes to mind." (While not welcome, I think it is true...)

Good luck Bro -- (or should I say, break a leg?)

This is what I will go to the tire dealer and tell him what happened... I would asking him to replace both tire and wheel. If he agreed that because of the defective konig rim I almost get killed and better replaced the new damages wheel/tire.. If he refused then, I have no choice but go to those guys Rim and Wheel Works in Newton, MA. to get my rim fixed. I will also ask them check and inspect the tire that was hit.

The pounding is just amini-fix to minimize the vibrations. I will get the wheel professionaly fixed and inspected. Tire would be inspected too.

Duh! It says that in the manual I think...
Even if it doesn't, its just common sense.

Why would this be unimaginable?

1.Your aware of your wheels being mixed.
2. You said it yourself, "I was driving fast on a ramp..."

Nashua, I'm glad your fine but please take stock of the situation when piloting an unbalanced 3500lb missile. Others might get hurt.

replace the tire, ericl is right. especially since you're rolling in low profiles, that tire is already weakened and it won't take much for that tire to pop.

There is light at the end of the tunnel....

Called the town fair tire, and told him I was in accident due the stock rim/tire. I added that I hit a curb and my tire was bent and tire got a bulge. He said hold on... told his manager and came back and said... get back your stock rims and we take care of that for you

I will ask to have my new rim/wheel and front wheel Alignment...

I got a break!

Seems that those guys at town fair tire are cool guys
