Loose Steering

When I bought the car the steering was pretty tight, which I liked, but now it is loose......when I hit an uneven road, the wheels turn too.....it never used to be like that.....what can I do to fix that.....what do I have to replace?

I know what your talking about. I miss the tight steering I had when I bought the car. Could it have something to do w/ installing springs? Thats when the steering loosened up and its been getting worse ever since.

I never noticed anything change with how tight the steering was before. But once I got my springs installed, the steering really loosened up.

I haven't done any mods to my car and the steering has gotten WAY loose. I posted a topic about this last week. It's almost like there's no reaction to the steering action.

Be interested to see what's up. Alignment problem maybe?

Is there anything that can be done to tighten steering? Or maybe decrease the amount of power steering?

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but YEAH... My steering pulls every time I hit an uneven road. At first I just though I was going crazy but this post confirms my (at least partial) sanity. I have springs and tires. I didn't notice the feeling until the tire mod. Solutions?? Steering fluid? Power steering belt wearing? I just stabbing here.

could the loose steering be caused because of the amount of tread on the tire? like more tread or a new tire would give a tighter feeling then a car with less tread or no tread on a tire???

or could it be an alignment problem?

deflated tire?

same here.....I have gone through serveral sets of tires and the loose steering doesn't change.
I know a couple of friends of mine on BMW's had their steering column replaced w/ stiffer ones, but their steering never became looser. I don't want to talk to my Acura service manager because I know he will say it has to do with the springs.

My old BMW terraplaned (caught road irregularities) like a bitch because of an overtightened steering rack bolt and 225 series tires. I haven't experienced this on the Acura yet but the turning radius is enormous. Tires and alignment are the usual culprits. Anyone know anything about the steering mechanicals for the CL?

Is this a case for a TSB for the steering? I don't know if it's a hazard or not...perhaps if you were driving with no hands!

I noticed my steering starting to feel looser as well but I just assumed it was me getting used to the car. Go figure.

the looseness does not come from mods or tires wear or anything like that....it has to be from the mechanics of our car's steering.....it might be that some ball joint or something wears way to fast or something.......when I test drove my car and then bought it, the steering was great, very tight...but now it is loose.....I hate when I hit uneven roads and my car pulls towards all directions....this sucks.....doesn't someone here have a buddy at an Acura dealer.....if this is you, can you ask what the deal is?

If that's the case then I'm taking my car in for warranty work.

I have like 2000 miles and haven't really noticed anything yet. I'll keep an eye on the steering and if it gets loose, then definitely it's gonna go in for warranty work!

Well now that its agreed upon that many of us are experiencing the same problem, how do we fix it? Can we take it to Acura and bitch at them? I know the service people are going to start blaming it on the suspension modifications. Is there any way we can fix this problem ourselves?

I thought I was crazy.... glad (as glad as I can be) that I'm not the only one with this problem. I replaced the tires, and that didn't help one bit. Hopefully someone can figure out what's going on.

someone should start a loose steering poll. This is very troubling to me as the CL is on my short list of cars to buy.

This is a BITCH!! Since I did't think it was a problem, and it was supposed to be that way, i got used to it. For the past two days ever since this thread started I have been noticing it more and more.......AND ITS ANNOYING THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!

Is there anything we can do about this? I know if I take the car to Acura, they will just say its due to my suspension modifications. I recently drove my buddy's new 6spd, and I miss that tight feeling, especially at high speeds (80mph+)

This is all very surprising. I would assume the steering is basically the same as an Accords. Those cars are alway praised for "precise steering". Why have millions of Accord owners not been screaming about this.?

i dunno if the accord has the same steering system.

does the accord have the speed sensitive feature?

the TL is different then us...

the TL is torque sensitive rather then speed sensitive and it feels MUCH tighter.

Yea I drive an accord, and I asked the people on my forum about it(accordv6.com) and no one has said anything about loose steering.

I would have also thought that the Accords and CL's share the same steering, but who knows....

So our CLS has "speed sensitive" steering? What's the difference? (sorry, this may be a dumb comment).

I dont know if mine is loose or not...after I got springs sways and tires (all at once) the steering got different. I put all this stuff on the car with in the first few months and now I have over 10k miles. Can someone describe what they mean by loose steering? The roads here are almost always uneven and the car seems to pull to whatever side the road is leaning. Like if I were to drive with out hands I would be in a hell of a lot of trouble. I just thought that was from the better tires and the tighter handeling?!?!

I noticed also from day 1 that my 6-speed pulls slightly to the right when driving...and this is consistent. Before I bought the car, they checked it and everything looked good. But I bought the car anyways. Anybody else have a stock CLS 6spd that pulls slightly right?

I find this common on most FWD cars, so iono...

Also, some roads are convex, to drain water better, so that might have to do something with it to.

Wheel-alignment and tire-rebalncing could be an answer to your problems!
