looking to buy

Hey guys, I did a quick search but couldn't find what I was looking for. I am in the market for either a CL or TL Type-S. Is there anything I should keep an eye out for or be aware of? I know there is a problem with the Auto trannys but I haven't read in depth what its all about yet. If you had to buy your car all over again, what would you do differently?

Thanks in advance

in my opinion the 6 speed is a must in CL due to the transmission issues. even if it has been replaced, it still can not be trusted.

Is it really that bad? I read that it had something to do with excessive heat to the 2nd gear. What are the symptoms of future failure?

Buying an Auto CL is like getting together with a dirty hooker... Its essentially like taking your chances with herpes...

And yes, my CL has had its herpes taken care of twice already but that doesn't make it any safer.

ugh...that doesn't sound very pleasant. I'm not a betting man, so I dont know that I will take my chances with an auto, but thats kinda what I wanted. I had a G35C 6sp and then an 04 Mustang Cobra and now I'm looking for something a little more relaxed that I only plan to mod for looks and audio/vid.

I don't want to deter you either, who knows, you might enjoy herpes. Good luck.

Not necessarily, if you find a 5AT CL you like, just check the VIN before you buy

What is the typical price for a transmission repair/replacement for these cars?

The automatic transmission is pretty hit or miss.

Mine has 80k on it and feeling strong.

It also had the 2nd gear work done from the dealer so I don't know what to tell you.

If I could have done it over again I probably would have gone for the 6 speed

But I didn't want or enjoyed a manual transmission in San Francisco when I had one

Because there were far too many hills over 50 degrees slope and too much traffic.

6 speed is the safer bet but your budget might have to go up a bit to get an 03.

Has anyone in here had their tranny go in the past 6 months? I'm just kind of curious because everyone keeps acting like this is a common problem still.

A.) Yes it was a known fault and the fail percentage was high when it comes to car issues but it isn't like 9 out of 10 cars broke down with transmission problems.

B.) I honestly haven't heard of many trannys crapping out recently, maybe I am not looking hard enough but isn't it possible the oil jet mod helped fix this problem.

C.) The cost would be about $3k to fix the tranny if you had to pay for everything. But I have heard that Honda will be accommodating and has given goodwill and only made people pay in the $500-$1,000 range even if they are out of warranty.

Don't let this scare you off, because you will be hard pressed to find another car with the looks, performance, and all around solid feel of the CL-S.

That is a refreshing post. I found a few locally that I think I might go test drive and see how they feel. Thanks for the info

From: The grande.. Riverdale NJ.. Hopefully moving to skyline village in Lincoln park NJ..yes dirty jersey
I had my auto CL - S since march 2000..
My tranny went three times, but if i was to do it again I prob would, Im acctully looking into a 05 RL when my job picks up (im in sales)
The reason I would do it again is mainly buy the way I have been treated by the dealers in my area, where other dlrs would not give me time of day the acura dealers in my area where there no questions asked and thATS why i will prob stick with acura.
My expirence with my trannies was my first went at 36K and second went at 99K I know have 160K and tranny is smooth and engine runs like it has 30K car STILL feels solid. I think if u change your tranny fluid every 30k and dont use sportshift u will be fine.

btw YOU CAN find a 04 TL for 10k range if u look hard and u had a g35c and stang b4 so what is your price range with this purchase?

Well, I got laid off and thats why I had to ditch the Cobra. I am looking to spend somewhere around $8K or so. I don't plan to ever use the sport shift just because I just got out of a 500hp 6speed Cobra and it won't be the same lol. I just want a nice commuter car that has a luxurious feel and looks good doing it lol.
