Launch Tips

Hey guys, I just moved to Sacramento and there's a drag strip like 10 miles from my place. Went for the first time, and wanted to get some tips.

My 60' was about 2.6s, my ET was about 14.8, and my trap was about 95mph.

I read the sticky in the racing section which helped alot, but my launch is still terrible. I wanted to know: should I be dumping the clutch and then modulating the throttle, or should I release the clutch slowly and modulate both clutch and throttle?

What rpm should be good for essentially a stock CL-S6?

You could learn to double clutch or what ever you want to call it. You will have to play around with the eng speed and finding the right clutch release point.
Holding the clutch just below the the release point you give it some gas quickly let the clutch out but not all the way, press to clutch back in but not to the release point then let it out (just interrupting the clutch engagement for 1/2 sec). All of this happens very quickly. The point of the hole thing is to get the car to jump and start rolling, If you have good traction it will want to bog down the double clutching will let the engine keep spinning and build power. If you start blowing the tires of let up just a little while double clutching and this will let the tires start to regain traction again. This is all in a second or two, you don't really want to ride it out or you can burn up your clutch.
Once to start to get the hang of that you can start dropping to tire pressure in the front for more traction and then and some air to the rear to help with weight transfer to the rear.
Hope that helps it's note really the easyest to explain

Yea, I understand the idea of what you're saying. That will definitely be something I will try out and practice.

When do you go WOT? Do you only go WOT when the clutch has fully caught on?

You definitely dont want to dump the clutch, in my opinion, unless you have slicks. You want to do more of an aggressive rolling launch like you would do from a stoplight. Just keep the revs to 2500rpm's or so and on green, start giving it gas and easing off of the clutch. The trick is to gauge your traction as you're accelerating. Once it hooks, you can floor it and then slam through the gears.

If you just dump the clutch from the start, you'll do nothing but spin.

I agree with Future's post above. I've gotten my car just the wya I want it over the past few months and have been hitting the track the past 2 weeks to see what she could do. On Bridgestone performance all seasons I was pretty much consistently putting down 2.15 60fts with a best time of 13.69@103mph. Did this by preloading at the line and just feathering the gas until I felt the car was fully hooked and then let her rip the rest of the way. I might add I aired the tires down to about 26psi for all these runs. Can post slips if you'd like

Yeah, that's me. The audio is funny because I was consistently hitting 14.0's until that run. Wasn't really pushing her though.

X2 on the tire pressure and the poster above that mentioned it. I lowered the fronts to about 22lbs. Just make sure as TLS NC pointed out that you make a few runs first to get comfortable with the launch then lower tire pressure as the car handles slightly different as you're crossing the line. Nothing big though

Trying to launch these cars on anything other than at least summer tires is pointless, imo.

I was able to run 13.9 with a CAI, adj shocks, and 18" drag radials.

I have Continental Extreme Contact DW summer tires. I'm going to keep practicing, and hopefully I will be able to get down to 2.1s 60' times.

Pretty much. Expect 2.2-2.3 60's mostly. If you can use drags that will lower. Also experience helps you more then anything else. I have little & even suck launching my current car.
