Land Rover-Discovery

Any Truck Lovers out there ? My Wife has fallen in Love....

Anybody had experience with these ? Probably be a year or so before we get one, so 2003+ Models

I was Very Impressed upon driving one over their 30 Degree rock Formation. Thing holds like Glue.

Check any Comsumer Reports Mag and also JD Power rankings.
And from personal experience, my cousin had a 97 Range Rover back in the day and it was in the shop every month. After many trips back to the dealer he finally got the car lemon lawed. In the end its your money, but don't say you weren't warned.

ok, I'm hearing ya, but many would say the same about our CL-S with the Tranny Issues, but its Generally a Good Car.

97 is a WORLD of difference from 2003 Models in ANY Car.

harsh ride (the ones I've been in anyway)

you should probably do a search for quality ratings online if there is a concern (not that we don't know everything )

2003 JD Powers Initial Quality

Land Rover is the worst after Hummer. Then comes Kia, and Saab. Yeah I couldn't believe it.

The Top 4 where (in order) Lexus, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Acura. (yeah japs rule!)

This was based on quantity of problems per 100 cars during the first 90 days.

I cannot upload the chart, crap !

Discoveries have been known to be VERY poorly built. I read this some years back and I doubt much has changed since then.

Plus how many 30 degree rock formations are u gonna climb once u get that thing?? I'm guessing NONE. I still dont see the fascination ppl have with big suvs with TRUCK suspension which will only be used to drive on ROADS. How can ppl drive around in something so uncomfortable?

Anyway, buy a nice volvo wagon on something and u'll be much better off and not endanger other ppl's lives on the road.

We're on our second one, the old one is a '99 with 70k trouble free miles, the new one is an '02 and rides a lot nicer. The only problems we've had with the 99 is the sunroofs squeek (must be my destiny) and the door seals are not so tight, sometimes a little water comes in through the rear one.....otherwise, it's been great, goes off road a lot too, handles like a champ. I've been to the Rover driving school in VT which was informative and fun (you learn a whole lot of off-roading tricks). The old one gets about 18 mpg, the new one about 19 combined which for a 5000 lb vehicle is not bad at all. It's great in the wet because of the all wheel drive, sticks like glue. In the few emergency situations I've had where I honestly thought I may roll it, it always came out of the situation well. I bought my CL based on Honda statistics and reputation, and honestly, in 38K, I've had more major things wrong with the CL than the Discovery which all of the stats said to to stay away from. The '02 seems to be following the '99 in terms of trouble free motoring. And ...ya gotta love a vehicle with 2 sunroofs and the glass roof sides, how much goofier can you get.

A total POS. At the Lexus Redifined Event (43 SUVs tested as long as you want), one broke down (along with the new Volvo). It was univerally recognized by our group and by strangers alike, it was by far the worst SUV there. You should have seen the faces on people after they got out this SUV. Awful fit and finish. You feel every bump in the road, the controls are hard.

It even is hated in the U.K and Europe. The only reason to buy is of the badge. A new one is right around the corner.

Damn Caddy, your in GA, the event was at Stone Mountain. It was great, test from the worst Land Rover to the best LX 470 and Range Rover and everything in the middle like the 4.4 X5. Plus smoked salmon, smoothies etc etc etc. I drove every SUV there.

I noticed women love em. There are 5 in my lot at work and all driven by women. It's the name.

The one thing I agree with in 1sicklex's post is that they didn't try to pretty it up by making seem like a car inside or outside like lexus and all of the others out there. The thing I totally disagree with is buying it for the bage becacue most people really thing that they are POS's so what status can that possibaly have? Maybe our old one is the ONLY great one in existance but I hope the new one is half as good. We had a Navigator for about 3 months before we realized it was not half as capable as the Land Rover for our needs, it was just a big, pretty, plush car. If you look, women drive most of the SUV's on the road anyway.

Land Rovers, I know them well.....

I just sold my '95 Diso last fall after purchasing my '03 CL. I sold it because it was EXPENSIVE to properly maintain. We still have our '96 4.0SE Range Rover and a '98 Disco, but my folks just pay the bills.

We purchased extended warranties for all the LRs we purchased. During the first 100k, I encountered just over $26,000 in reparirs for the '95 disco, and $18 for the range rover!!!!

Random things, like the '96 had modded sunroofs, so I had them replaced at a tune of $3200 covered under warranty. It all added up-

Be careful of the Hydrol. Susp. in the new Discos and Ranges, they could be future maintenance nightmares!!!

Got the cash, pay the maintenance and bills, enjoy the tank-

my neighbor had one and every other week or two it would be in the shop for 1-2 days. His family had an endless nightmare of problems with it and ended up ditching it for a ford pickup.
His ford is problem free and anytime i'm with him and we see a land rover he just starts going off about what a peice of shit his was and how horrible of an experience it was for him and his family.
Most people buy one for their name its not as common as a jeep so the people that drive them think their "special".

You have been warned. Good luck.

I sure consider myself lucky then...26K maintenance...jeez. Mine (as with all of my other cars) goes into the dealer for service every 4K and NEVER anything out of the ordinary. Caddy, you'd better re-think this, I think I got the only 2 good ones out there. I dont' see how anybody could buy them for their name, everybody thinks they are POS's. We bought ours for their fantastic off road capability (and the dual sunroofs and the "vista cruiser glass" are cool too). Caddy, maybe talk your wife into something more reliable like a Lexus, the new ones are really nice.
