Key FOB

Does anyone know the etymology of the phrase "Key FOB" From what ive been reading its just something attached to a chain and its german. But im curious as how it came to such large use, and why did the germans call things attached to their watch chains FOBs? Im just bord here at work and the word always pissed me off, so id like to find out more about it. Thanks
