just turned 1k on '03 Cl-S 6speed...MPG city 15/ Highway 22 Normal????
I've been told that the car's MPG improves with mileage, but I'm just would like some replies from some people who have the '03 MT to see if my MPG iv'e been getting (avg. 15 city/ 22 hwy.) is acceptable or maybe something might not right with the engine. Otherwise it runs really well and strong,no problems.

how hard are you driving it? hopefully no high rev's under the 1K mile mark.
i'm averaging anywhere from 22-25mpg on the freeway, but that's stop and go driving because of the commute to work.

thanks guys for your input....I am not driving it aggresively. Slyraskal I followed the break in ritual pretty well...probably got around 4k once or twice but thats it. The city mpg is here in NYC so its the worst possible scenario for that number I realize

I average between 18-24 with everyday driving which is mostly city & country roads.
On the Highway I’ve seen 28, but I haven’t gone on a long enough trip to pass 30…..YET.
And I’m NOT easy on the throttle. I like to wind it past 5K a couple times a day.

Where is my super sauce?
Even though my highway mileage was good (pushing 30 MPG) my all city tanks were piss poor at about 16 - 17 MPG, even after several thousand miles. I then did an experiment.
I did one all city tank and tried to make all my shifts points at around 2 - 2.5 K. I got around 19.5 MPG. Just what the EPA estimate says.
I then paid attention to when I normally like to shift and discovered it was more like 3.8 - 4.5 K (right in the second plenum or early VTEC range). Guess what? The all city tank mileage was back down to about 17 MPG.
What did I learn - gas consumption is directly related to engine revving and driving style.
I've noticed that my mileage has been slowly improving over time, even though I tend to like to rev the car a bit. I would expect yours to be the same. Pay attention to how you drive and do an experiment like mine. Tell us what happens.

It'll get better. I've seen a steady improvement on my CLS (3200 miles). I haven't run the numbers yet, but I've kept track of the mileage and gas added at every fillup.
I used to get about 220 miles per tank, and now I'm up to about 280 miles per tank (city/highway driving).
I've read somewhere on the forum that MPG will improve up till about 10,000 miles then level out

11,000+ miles since Aug 31st ... normally don't get worse than 27.5 mpg ... just completed a 3288 mile round trip from Pa to central Texas and had a composite of 29.91 mpg (headwinds going to Texas, tail winds coming back) ... normally seeing between 28.5 and 29.5 mpg with each tankful - obviously this daily driver sees a lot of interstate (135 miles/day round trip home to work) ... no major differences due to either mileage traveled or winter gas --- and this thing gets topped off to the brim each/every time!

I think I know your problem. Look at your heater/a/c display. Does it say "full auto?" If it does, your a/c is running all the time! If so, you are using 10 to 15 horsepower to swing the air conditioner. Push the left hand button under the display until it says "a c off". The car will be faster, and feel like it has less "drag" attached to it. That "full auto" looks cool, but it costs money.
After getting a 3.2 CLS, coming from a RSX-S which is pretty frugal, I thought "boy, this thing drinks gas!" After a week, I found out the problem. I live in the Chicago area, near O'hare, and traffic is rediculous. I get 22 city, all the time, with 2,400 on the odo. A recent trip to Holland, Michigan yielded 25.2 mpg, stopping frequently for tolls in Illinois, with the cruise control on when ever it could be on, cruise set at 80 mph. Beware, anytime you engage the front windshield defrost control, your a/c is on. Turn the a/c off whenever possible.

Yeah, it totally depends on your driving style. My first tank was 23.37mpg... but now my average is up to 27.41mpg with a best of 30.07! YES! I usually drive mine pretty easy and only take it out for non-city trips...

What's the deal with the breakin period. If I take it easy for the next 800 miles, will that help improve mileage?

dont worry it WILL get better... when i first bought my CLS.. i only got 170 miles with my first tank of gas.. and after 2 oil changes i got 240... now i normally get 260-280 BUT i drive 70% freeway and 30 %local... i would never get 260 Miles for a full tank with pure local driving. i have 25k on my 01 CLS
anybody wanna calculate what s my MPG??? i dont even know how big my gas tank is
PS: i get better milage with my I/H/E than when my car was STOCK...

I can’t believe how many of you guys don’t know how to calculate MPG.
It’s quite simple.
Fill up the gas tank until the pump clicks off
Reset the A or B trip counter in the car to ZERO.
DRIVE…..DRIVE…..DRIVE
When you’re down to a quarter tank or so, stop and fill it up again.
Check the pump and write down how many gallons you put in.
Write down the miles that the trip counter says.
MILES divided by GALLONS = MPG
That concludes today’s MATH lesson
