just screwed up electricity in car

okay guyz, so before i tried to mess around with my car, i had these 2 little extra bulbs custom hooked up to the back seat of my car so at night time it would be convenient for passengers

but i thought the little bulbs were ugly, so i decided to switch to neon tubes that usually plug into your cigarette lighter

i just cut off the piece that goes to the cigarette lighter and instead directly connected the wires to my old existing wires

at first, it worked, but after i put electric tape on everything, it wouldn't work. I had it hooked up to a switch on my dash that also controlled my fog lights, and now nothing workz

not only that, but my cd deck and clock doesn't work either seems to have lost power to the front (but not headlights or indiglows)

did i blow a fuse or something? i didn't really check the gauge of wires or anything before cuz i thought i could probably just hook the neons on without much problem

sorry its so long, but any help would be appreciated

To check all your fuses would be the logical place to start.

remix... look in the fuse boxes... look at the top of each fuse... if the bridge inside looks burnt or broken... examine it closer... its prolly gone.

Sorry, but if you don’t know what a blown fuse looks like you shouldn’t be installing neon lights in the car without assistance.

Electrical isn't hard, but you could fuck things up really really bad.

Hey you moron: Leave you car alone. You can cause thousands of dollars of damage to your electrical system, if you don't watch out!

And electrical tape to finish off the connections? Boy, I'll bet that looks really cool. What's next? Fuzzy dice? Dingleballs?

I wasn't thinking about the dollar damage.

How about a fire? Believe me you don't want this.

Back in the 80s I was sitting at a stop light with my new car and all these gizmos I had hooked up..bright lights everywhere. Then I smelled smoke. You know, that electrical smoke. Then I saw white smoke.

Ran the light pulled into the 7-11 and jumped out of the car...and I prayed with tears in my eyes that my car didn't burn up in the parking lot. Fuse finally blew and I spent days pulling burnt wires and getting use to the smell of burned plastic and wire and rubber.

Today, 20 years later, I still carry an electrical fire extinguisher in my trunk.

OMG. I have to give it to you. I thought I was one of the craziest guys in this board when it comes to electrical system but now I know you are way beyond me. You dont know how to check for a blown fuse and you install an alarm system in your car

Do not put a bigger fuse in. No need. You blew the fuse because you grounded the wire. Do not put a larger amp fuse in!!!!!!!

What you should do is just get a piece of wire and shove it in both of the contacts where the fuse goes. Those pesky fuses do nothing but cause problems. I have Neon under my seats, my rear deck, under the dash, and on top of the dash. I stole the power from my glove box light, and it did nothing but blow those annoying fuses. I used to have the same problem when I ran my 18 guage power wire to both my RF BD1000 amps, but once I took that fuse out of the line everything works out great. Good luck!

I suggest that to not have problems with blown fuses, you replace the fuse with a length of 8 gage wire. Blown fuses will be a thing of the past.

so you mean i connected the wires wrong in the first place which is why the fuse blew?

cuz everything was working fine until i tried to electric tape the ends, but i might have let the two wires touch each other while taping, so that's why the fuse blew?

oh and all you guys that are suggesting getting rid of the fuse altogether, are u serious? lol

but yeah seriously i need to kno wut to do, and i really plan to put the lights in so plz just giv me sum advice

sorry for the newbism (the alarm workz tho =D )

Run a seperate line from the battery and fuse it. So, now you don't have to worry about shorting other things out. You would have a decicated line just for the neon lights. And, yes, the 2 wires must have touched to blow the fuse.

I can’t believe the stupid advice that is being given here.
The guy might not understand that you're joking.
I HOPE you’re joking anyway. I don’t see any smiles in those posts.

NEVER cross the fuse out with a jumper wire !!!!!

Did you hear the one about the good ol' boy from Texas that blew the stereo fuse in his old Ford pickup? He found a .22 bullet under the seat and stuck it in the fuse panel.

When he turned on his radio, he shot himself in the kneecap!

I know it sounds like a joke, but it's 100% true.

Another good alternative is to just wrap the fuse in Aluminum foil. That works great too.

alrighty thanx
so i should just buy a new fuse of the same amp and not touch the two wires together this time right?

is it possible that the neons take too much electricity so i need more amps?

Okay...here's what I would suggest. I would pull out the fuse. Go to the connection where you used the electrical tape, ditch the tape and either solder those together, or use a butt connector. THen, AFTER it's all hooked up (making sure the neon is off) put a new fuse (of the same rating) back in. If it blows, then you're neon is drawing too much current and you'll need to steal your power from somewhere else. I'm guessing you'll be okay though. BTW, all my other answers were sarcastic. This one is my real suggestion
