Just hit the legendary 147 mark tonight!

So I've had the car almost a year now and tonight was the night, I finally hit 147!!!!
I'm assuming it was 147 at least, the speedometer looked like it was 149 but I've read that the gas cutoff is at 147.

I certainly hope it was at the track. Do you know what would happen to you and your passengers and people in other cars if you wrecked going 150mph? You would be in a million pieces and destroy other innocent lives and there families. Im sorry but thats just absolutly stupid going 150 in a CL on a public road. Hopefully next time you get caught before you kill yourself

^^ in public roads teeming with cars, i would agree.

however on an open road with no one around you for miles .. free game until a cop spots you. that way you're only putting yourself at risk, and you face the consequences alone .. although your friends and family will bite it hard if they find out your body pieces are scattered in some bushes somewhere.

I'm pretty sure the fuel doesnt cut off at 147.... A friend of mine has a CL-S 6mt just like mine and I was with him once when he got 155 on interstate 75 here in GA. He has basic bolt ons, but not anything that would change the air/fuel systems.

then he didn't make it to 155. there is no way to defeat the speed limiter on stock ecu.

Yeah...I've only done 120...my avatar speaks for itself.

won't goin downhill increase your mph and go past your car's "governed" speed?

the deceleration due to wind resistance will be much greater than any acceleration caused by gravity at those speeds. Keep in mind only gravity is driving you past 147 since the motor no longer has spark/fuel/whatever the cutoff is.

Also, I don't htink the CLS6 is speed limited. only the auto's.

It was on a public road but was really late at night and I did a drive through first to make sure there were no cops then waited for a time where I was the only one on the road. I'm sure my fuel did cut off because when my needle was on the 150 I could hear it the engine letting off and coming back on when the governer kicked in.

The interesting thing is that I hit 147 in fourth gear, I didn't even need to use 5th

There were no passengers, and yes I am aware of what would happen when traveling at that speed, I understand the physics that even rear-ending a slow car going in same direction would be like a head on collision and a head on collision at that speed... well.... yeah I know. But it's not like I just drive like that when I'm late for work flying by everyone in the emergengy lane. I'm on a 6 lane highway late at night which when empty is just as safe as the track. I don't live my life throwing all caution into the wind and never thinking of consequences, but I also don't live my life worrying that every time I walk outside a tree branch is going to fall on my head and kill me or that every time I go swimming I'll get attacked by a shark and die. Thanks for the advice though

It sure was fun, HUGE adrenaline rush

If the road is clear of traffic, it's not that big of a deal... It's not like mbtslc does 150mph every day...

I was talking about tires with my brother last night and he reminded me of the story when he did about 140mph for about 15 miles on the highway and when he pulled off and stopped he said you could smell the tires because they were so hot ( S rated tires )...

I've set cruise control at 100mph for about an hour driving down to florida from MA... middle of the night (3am or so) driving down thru SC and GA back in my crazy younger days...

A search for electronically limited or gear ratios will turn up a ton of threads on top speed...

I don't think it's a coincidence that the CL is outfitted with V rated tires which are rated for up to 149 mph

Speedometers on cars are not entirely accurate and the faster you go, the more they can be off. The only sure way to know what speed your going is GPS or radar/laser.

a single antenna GPS will not give an accurate speed reading as they can only get you within an accuracy of about 150ft. The only truly accurate GPS reading comes from a 2 antenna system and that can get you to accuracy of 1.5cm or less and the antennas have to be a certain distance apart and require the use of a base station for a correction signal.

I was reading in this that speed thread and one of the things that I would tend to disagree with is the 6mt launching better than an auto. That is solely driver dependent and if you have 2 average drivers, and everthing is equal the guy with the auto will usually win...off the line...automatics (due to torque converters) have the ability to multiply the torque available by 2-4x the manual catches up quickly due to lighter weight and no slippage...

Also I believe that although the CL type S 6mt is rated at 260HP, it is acutally around 270+ based upon it's accelleration numbers.... 60lbs does not equate to almost .5 sec quicker run times

and if you're running anything other then the OEM tire on the car, the calibration on the speedometer is going to be off...

less power lost through drivetrain plus shorter gear ratios can make a car with the same flywheel power faster.

all the Cls/TLs blocks are the same. there are a small hand full of parts you must change on the whole motor assembly like cam sprocket etc. to make it work for either trans.

I think mine is a little off for this reason, I have with 225x40x18's which are just a hair smaller. That would make my speedometer show I'm going a little faster than I actually am.

I know that the engine is electronically limited at 147, does anybody know if that is based off the RPM's in 4th and 5th or exactly how it works, because my speedometer was definatly past 147, it looked like 149 or 150 before it kicked in

The bigger the tire the slower you go.

Speed is determined by VSS and this is taken from output shaft on transmission

Talking Saw 150 on the A60 Autobahn, '01 CLS

The fuel-cutoff does happen around 147, but I had a lot of momentum as I was accellerating on a downhill. After the fuel cut-off I still touched 150, but after that it was simply in and out of the fuel-cutoff.

The first thing I did (other than put gas in the car and put on my German plates) was to hit the autobahn and find the limiter. It got there in a hurry. I also ran from Wittlich Germany to the Frankfurt airport at an average speed of about 130. It does nothing for your mileage, I can tell you that. It's about a 90 minute drive at that speed and it took 3/4 of a tank!

I guess it wasn't that bad...

I was late (wife arriving at Frankfurt, alarm didn't go off) so gas mileage wasn't a big deal! Typically I would set the cruise to about 100mph on the autobahn and the mileage was pretty close to normal (350/tank).

Trivia - above about 85mph the windshield washer fluid pretty much blows right over the windshield.

Having driven the car on a few occasions at or close to the limiter, it's my opinion that it wouldn't go much above 150 even without the limiter. I saw that question asked in another thread ("how fast would it go?") and I think it's somewhere under 160 (stock) even without the limiter.

Yeah I've noticed the same thing when it's raining. When going that fast I don't even need to use my wipers. Friends in my car on a road trip were asking me if I had coated my windshield to get the rain to run off like it was, and I said "yeah, 90 mph wind"

can't say that I agree with hittin' this kind of speed on public roads.

Clear road or not, you come up retardedly quick on anything around when going @ almost 150 mph. Coming up speed combined with the shitty single piston brakes on the CL's, it's just plain scary.

But as long as you're having fun.

Thank god for my BMW for high speed runs. Oh well, I am new here, just picked up a CL Type-S last this weekend. Looking forward to it being a good replacement as my daily driver from my old Civic HB.
