Just bought 03 CL-S 6Speed

Hi, i'm new to the forum. I just bought a silver 03 CL-S 6 speed w/ 41k miles and am going to go pick it up later this week to bring back to New Orleans. Any advice on things i should ask the dealer to check? Its an 8 hour drive to bring her back to new orleans and i just want to make sure everything is in good order before i come back. This is my first car purchase and anything is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Can you elighten us on what you paid. It helps the other 6 speeds judge the real worth of the car.

Welcom to the club!

Make sure the tires are in goosd shape. Not much to check really. Just the basic stuff. I'm sure you have an Acura dealer closer to you. If any problems do come up you can take it there. It's still under warranty.

Thanks guys, i'm really excited to pick this car up. This is my first manual transmission car...ever since i drove my friends 6speed 04 accord, i knew i wanted a manual. I'll have to practice a little before i drive the trip back. Lucky for me, a friend of mine is willing to make the trip back with me. As for price, i payed 16382. I think i got a good deal, since this is well below trade-in on edmunds.com

That's what i thought too. I was originally looking for a 6speed RSX, but when i found out i could get a CL-S for this price, i had to jump on it.

Ask the dealer if it's ever been in an accident. I don't know what it's like in the States, but in Canada, the dealer doesn't have to tell you it's been in an accident unless you ask. it might also be worthwhile taking it to a mechanic to check the clutch.

i also have an '03 6-speed, and just to warn you, the clutch is a little touchy in the first couple of gears (at least compared to a TSX... I had one of those for 12,000 km before i wrote it off).

Already did a carfax report and it was clean. It had 1 owner and was bought april 2003. Thanks for the advice on the clutch. I'm guessing its similar to the Accord 6speed? I thought that was pretty touchy.

How often does a clutch need to be replaced on a manual?

It all depends on the car and how you drive it, but my last car, a mitsubishi galant, 150k miles and the clutch was still working. I think in most cases your transmission (manual) should last at least 100k miles.

Carfax only reports data that is reported to police and maybe insurance. So unreported accidents/repairs etc will not show up. Just have it checked over by a body/paint man so you know, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me at that price anyway.

Geez, that's one hell of a deal you got there bud! From your post, it sounds like you bought the car sight unseen. It also sounds like it may be too late to back out of the deal!

The 6spd's don't have common problems, except perhaps an oil leak in the rear main. But there's a TSB from Acura to get that fixed, so it's really not a problem.

Your post is very much like my 1st post here couple weeks ago. Good luck with the car. I am going to pick up my car today as well!

congrats - the six speed is SOLID!
I consider myself a heavy footer and i rev the shits out of it. Never had a problem. The 1-2 shift can be touchy, but you'll get used to it.

Enjoy!

Congrats on the new car - you got a heck of a deal. That wasn't the one that was in Memphis? I had saw one up there about a month ago when I was looking. I ended up buying an '03 CL-S with 13k miles on it. Same color as yours, but I paid a little over $20k to a dealer in Austin. I love it - I'm glad I waited to find a good used one with the prices like they are. That first year depreciation is tough on the CL's!

I also saw someone who has a silver 6-speed here in Houston over the weekend with Clear Lake Infiniti license frame and an LSU frame on the back - was curious as to who bought it. I looked at that car, but took the one in Austin with less mileage.

This is my first post the board too - I've been reading for the last month (this web forum rocks!), but decided it was time to post. Also since I saw this guy is in New Orleans. I might be in Houston, but still claim N.O. as home.

Texastiger, I think I test drove your car here in Austin, it was nice, seemed barely broken in. that's one of the lowest mileage I've seen lately on an 03. My 6 speed had 7500...but that was a year ago. congrats!

You may have - I bought it about a month ago from the Champion Dealer in Austin - Silver/Black with spoiler - I think they only had the car for a week or two at most when I bought it. I've been very happy - everyone thinks it's a new car. I clayed and waxed a couple of weeks ago and not a scratch or ding on it......hopefully it stays that way.

When I looked there was the one here in Houston I mentioned (30k miles at Clear Lk Infiniti) and one in Dallas that I know they had last week at the Fort Worth Lexus dealer. That one had 18k miles and no spoiler....at the time, the dealer wasn't budging on his price, but it's come down some in the past month.

I purchased in Dallas. I looked into the houston area, but couldn't find any 6 speeds. Keep in mind that i only had the ability to shop online since i am currently carless.

Out of curiosity, about how much do you guys pay for insurance? It's sky high here in new orleans. My agent in KS is chargin 177/month and thats by far the cheapest deal i could get. Please include your age too. Thanks.

I've never had any luck shopping on line. I also use the phone when searching for a new car because it's much quicker and more reliable than doing web searches which usually have stale data.

i just got one too

I just bought my '03 Cl type S 6speed last weekend and it's great. The mileage was just under 50k, but it was a dealer's car. I got it for $19905.50 including tax, title, etc. By the way, I'm in western PA and the car is in great shape. However, other similar type S automatics are going for $21k and above. Mine doesn't have navi, but i'm ok with that, i may just add it later. Since you guys were asking the user that started this thread about cost to get an idea of value, I thought i'd add to it.

As far as insurance goes, I know how New Orleans is.....I grew up all my life there and then lived in BR while at LSU and now in Houston.......Harris County insurance is a killer too - much like New Orleans. I don't have a direct comparison, but I pay $220/month to insure both my Acura and a 1999 Expedition. I used to only pay $110 to insure the Expy (Allstate). I'm 28 with a clean driving record.

I asked my insurance to insure the Expy as a recreational/weekend vehicle - apparently they don't understand that I can only drive one car at a time! Looks like I'll be looking around for a better policy that understands that.
