Japan's 276hp rule

In 1989 Japanese automakers agreed to restrict maximum hp to 276. The new Q45 is rated at 340hp in the US, but is still advertised at 276hp in Japan. What a ripoff for Nissan.

Toyota, Nissan, & Honda are all going to break the agreement in 2003 when they all unveil their new GT cars all rated at a minimum 400hp.

that 276hp rule is for cars sold IN japan, not exported or made and sold elsewhere.

280hp would be too easy for the evil white western man to remember, that's why it's 276hp.

They do some stupid things over there... I know its not our culture and we shouldn't judge... but that is just plain dumb. That would be like Intel and AMD both agreeing not to produce a faster microprocessor. The Japanese don't do everything right.

The new NSX when it jumps to 400+hp. It's had the same body for 10 years.

Cool....

I always associate the NSX with Acura not Honda... But it is a Honda in Japan...

i had some cousins who lived in japan for quite a few yrs. they learned how to "drift" over there and had opportunities to drive skylines, evos, STis, supras, and Zs (fairlady). from what they tell me, publicly, all those cars were under the 276hp rule, but dyno'd, quite a lot produced 300+ at least. everyone knows all their fast sh*t is underrated, but everyone is just going along w/ the 276 rule in public...

i'd love the opportunity to see street races over there...not this drag carp we see here on the state side...

This is not done only in Japan. Believe or not, in Italy, cars with over 2.0 liters get hit with additional taxes. So you see BMWs, Peugeots (and other cars you never see in the states) that are only 2.0 liters.
Regarding Ferrari and Lamborghini, guess if you can afford one you won't mind the extra tax.

It's not really a "rule". It's a Gentlemen's agreement between Japaneese Automakers. They can break it whenever they want.

Does anyone know if this is due to a safety concern, or a pollution concern?

It was put together mainly due to pollution.

I, too, remember reading that it was a "gentlemen's agreement" that was completely voluntary.

Several Japanese manufacturers rate horsepower in "ps" (pferdestarke -- a German word that's used by several countries as a measurement of metric horsepower.) 1hp = 1.0139ps so 276hp = 280ps, hence the "odd" number we get.
