jacking points

i just put my 19's back on using a 3 ton craftsman floor jack, and well the cup that lifts the car on the jack was so big that when i jacked the car up using the points on the car it bent them. now the 2 jack points in the front of my car are bent.

can anyopne take a pic of where eles it is ok to jack the car up from?

also do you guys know how much this will cost to repair? the jacking points?

With a small floor jack use the same lift points where the factory scissor jack goes.
They are on the sides directly behind the front wheel and just forward of the rear wheel.
Read the manual.

I think you used the front TIE DOWNS to lift your car which is a big NO-NO.
Those are just meant to hold the car down when being towed on a flatbed.
They bend real easy.

If you have a LARGE floor jack you can use the REAR center tie down as a lift or the cross member right under the engine.

Sorry, no new pics right now.

If it’s behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel then you lifted at the correct point.
I don’t know how you would have bent this.
I’ve lifted my car there with the above pictured jack many times and it’s fine.
I just put the “cup” of the jack entirely around the piece that projects from the car.

The tie downs I was speaking of are forward of the front tires.

I put a chunk of 2x4 hardwood in the cup of the jack. Just have the woodgrain perpendicular to the steel jacking point plate. Steel on steel = slippage.

From: Miami - just one day, I would like to drive without getting cut off!
I was trying to put on my rear sway bar yesterday and when I jacked the car up, the floor jack was so wide that I couldn't fit the jackstand under the lift points. So I jacked up the front at the lift points, which also lifted the rear enough to fit the jackstands underneath.

well there are 4 of these in between the front and rear wheels.

so i think i did not jack where you thought i did.
but from my perspective, the stock jack points are weak. its a thin piece of metal i mean come on how much weight can this support.

the thing is my cup on my jack is wider than the stock lifting point that one end hit the cup but the other end was inside the cup so it bent it. i mean why couldnt they make the lifting point a nice wide piece of steel so that you dont even have a chance of bending....

The “tabs” that stick down from the bottom of the car sit ENTIRELY inside the “cup” of my floor jack so it’s not even really touched when the car is lifted.
That’s why I can’t figure out how you could have bent it.
All it really does is keep the car from sliding out of place.
When I jack from the CENTER lifting points like shown in the photos above, I put the jack-stands in the factory lift points and then lower the car onto them.
I’ve done this many times on my 2001 & 2003 CL’s and never had a problem.

I bent that tab also, actually I think two of mine are bent. my floorjack touches them. I've heard of other people bending them too.

so what you do to jack the car now?

is it ok to jack it up using those tabs still? as long as they are in the cup of the jack?

I bent those tabs too. I just use the area around it (not the side skirt of course) that seems solid.

Have a shop take it off completely and weld a new one back on. They shouldn't charge more than like 20 bucks to weld one on.

Yeah my front passenger side jack point got bent ... I just use the area behind it (which should be part of the frame). No big deal ... I'll probably start using the front jack point (like in Shawn's pics) and then just drop my jack stands on/around the jack point area.

The tabs fit into the slot on the jack in the trunk. They are intended to ensure proper placement (and no movement) of the factory jack when changing a flat tire. The won't hold the weight of the vehicle.

The cup on my floor jack and jack stands is not big enough to reach around the tabs to the frame.

Shawn, you must have a big cup size. :o

I use 2 X 4 wood on the frame + jack stands, in the stock jack locations. I use the jacking points Shawn posted.

Yea, it’s about 4-5 inches across and the factory tabs easily fit completely inside.
