It's my turn for Tranny failure. What to do?

My tranny has been acting up lately then today I barely made it home from work. Erratic shifting, extreme slippage, high RPM's. Before I attempt to drive it either to the dealer or repair shop I'd like to know my options because chances are it won't make it and I'll have to get towed. It's a 2001 CLS with only 55K miles. So as far as warranty I'm outside the time limit but well within the miles. Should I first call the dealer or call Honda to see if they will provide any goodwill consideration? I figure if they pay at least half I'll get it done at the dealer. I just don't want to bring the car to the dealer and find out it'll will cost 5k and then have to get it towed somewhere else. But will they talk with me with out even looking at the car? Confused as what to do.

did it start happening after u drove it for a while?

Cause when mine went, it was after I had driven it for 15mins or so. then i let the car chill for an hour and drove home.

It it intermittent or is it better at some points?

Any lights On, on the dash?

call the dealer first and see if they can help. they might be able to if you use them for service and such.

make sure your fluid looks good. they might try to blame it on you if the fluid is black/burnt.

ummm ask P. Diddy he was first to do it, or nva-av6 (he did it) and from what I've read its not that much more work on top of swapping out the tranny itself

It was after driving for 1/2 hr. It use to be intermittent but the last 10 min of driving it was really bad. I don't want to risk driving it again unless it's to get it repaired. Then if it dies I'll have AAA tow it the rest of the way.

No dash lights on

That's the problem. The only time I use the Dealer is for warranty issues so I don't think he will do much for me. That's why I was thinking about calling Honda direct. But they probably won't talk to me unless I bring it to the Dealer first.

well its goodwill. they are obligated to repair it for you at a reduced cost, but it just helps if you have been with them before as opposed to dropping in for the first time and asking for a 2-4k repair.

Called Acura and they were no help at all. Said I needed to take it to the Dealer and work it out with them first and if I wasn't satisfied to call them back. They also said it's a case by case basis and there are no guaranties of getting a price reduction. So since I have no past relationship with the dealer I'll be taking it to a local repair shop that was recommended to me.

Look, go/call the dealer and talk to them as nice as possible and hopefully they will be gracious enough to at least cover most of the cost if not all(should have been able to tell you when you contacted them if it was covered). For the tranny I would only take it to Acura. If that doesn't work out, then go to your local recomended repair shop. Good luck

I recall in the thread they said the 08 TL transmissions won't work, and only half the transmissions from 07 will work. Basically anything 04-06, and some 07 TL's will work. 04-06 Odyssey transmissions work.

If I do the swap, I'll more than likely just get a 05 Odyssey trans

If your not the original, check the service records and see if the transmission was replaced before. If it was, it might still be a warranty on that specific transmission.

I don't know why you guys keep saying 3-4k for a tranny replacement. I was quoted 5900 for a new tranny.

I believe its outta the acura warranty time range because I heard that was supposed to be 7 years 108k miles, something like that.

But you can take it to a transmission shop and see if anything can be replaced. Dealerships only replace the transmission, they don't repair anything. When my tranny went, I took it to Amcco and they said it might be something minor that can be replaced and it would save a few thousand. I only said that cuz u said there was no lights on your dash.

But try with the dealership first and see if they will work with you.

The only time I go to dealers are for issues under warranty and to buy cars. When I go to get something fixed under warranty they always try to get me to service my car there and I kind of feel unwanted when I decline. I've changed the tranny fluid myself more times than required by the manual. Unfortunately I don't have the receipts to prove it. I just don't see any incentive for the dealer to help me. That is why I'm extremely disappointed with Acura when I called them and got no help. If they at least assured me that they would split the cost at a minimum then I would have taken it to the dealer. I'll be taking it to a local shop that was recommended to me on Monday. They have experience doing Acura's. I figure even if it needs a complete rebuild it will still be a lot cheaper than the dealer.

I am the original owner.

Yes it is past the time limit but way under the miles which is why I thought I'd get some consideration from Acura. A properly maintained transmission should not fail at 55K.

IMHO

Acura wants nothing to do with us 2nd Gen CL/TL transmission anymore.

They are probably doing the happy dance now that ALL of their extended warranties have expired so now they aren't obligated to do jack.

For w/e it's worth, get your tranny rebuilt and you'll save the most $.

i pulled through with only a 1900 bill. new gears, trans star tq converter, new low hold gear, and front trans mount all included.

So there is hope.

5900 for a tranny lol I would have bought a new car if that was the only option

damn only 55k miles for a 01 thats crazy. Sorrry about ur tranny issue. If Acura would cover it have them do it, otherwise skip dealer. There is a new thread from p.diddy about replacing thetranny with one from a newer tl or the odyssey tranny. I think that is the best option. If you replace with the CL tranny it is likely to fail again.

I got ya. Well all you have to do is call the dealership, tell them the VIN # and then they tell you if the tranny is covered or not. If it's not covered than end of story, go about your own means. I have read other threads where some dealership's vary and they decided to cover half the cost, or cover none of the cost at all.

Connecticut. I'll ask the mechanic about the alternatives. I just don't want this to drag out. Also, if they put in a different transmission they probably won't warranty it. I'm just looking to get another year out of the car so a rebuild should be fine.

I think you meant to say expensive cars, insurance, real estate and everything else imaginable that could be bought for money

Looks like I'll be joining the fail club soon... I hate my car right now, did not plan for it. And it was so good to me for the last 5 years, only minor issues and mods...

Getting my tranny done by your man. Should run around 1800-1900 including front mount. Got a quote over the phone from Acura in Burlington $6,400 plus taxes, crazy.
Thanks for the great lead on the mechanic.

That makes me think that these prices depend on certain individuals running those places. Shouldn't it be at least somewhat similar? I wonder how that person would react when you tell him you got a quote $2000 less at another Acura dealer. That's just fucked and a huge rip off, plus those remanufactured trannies fail even faster than original sometimes. With those prices people are better off getting a new car.
