intake question
intake question
Okay, I just swapped out the regular filter (non K&N ...or a K&N replica to be exact) with a real K&N made filter (huge, 8" long). Well the filter sits now VERY close to the splash guard. I have no bypass valve installed yet....a friend told me that it should be fine without the bypass unless the filter is completely submerged in water (if the filter is 1/2 way into the puddle, it should not draw any water into the engine).
What do you guys think? I'm going to put the AEM bypass valve on for security shake but do you think water will be sucked into the engine at 1/2 mark of the filter??
PS. With the new bigger filter, car seems to pull a lot stronger...I think air moves into intake a lot easier...again, may be just my imagination.

What i honestly think about the AEM bypass valve. If it's complete submerge...ur in deep shit with a BPV. But if you have it 1/2 way deep and ur flooring the sucker...water will start to suck up water, but i'm not for certain that it will go all the way up to your engine. But if it's 1/2 way deep and you're taking it slow...you'll be fine.
Go get a soda and a straw. Tilt the straw at an angle so half of it is submerged and half of it is not. Suck on it as hard as you can...you will get soda in your mouth. But the CAI is very steep, so i don't if water can travel all the way up there when it's 1/2 deep.

if the filter is completely submerged, and you are NOT heavy on the accelerator (in water that can submerged the filter, you better not be on the accelerator), then the BPV will provide some relief. If you're gunning it while the filter is submerged, then you're an idiot and deserve to have hydrolock.
if you don't have a bpv, and the filter is halfway submerged (and how are you actually going to guage this?), and you're not on the accelerator, or only a little, then it "may" not suck water, but if you're gunning it, then again, you're an idiot, and I believe that the momentum of the water flow from WOT or hard acceleration would suck the water far enough for hydrolock.
