Improved radio reception?
I know this should go in A/V but I figured I'd get more responses here. Has anyone gotten any kind of antenna booster? How do they work? I live like 60 miles north of NYC so I don't get some of the stations from there I like very well, lots of static. So I was just wondering if anything will help that.
Thanks
Melanie

Ive never used one but are you able to get stations like Hot 97 AT ALL?
They have one of the better broadcasting ranges of stations in the city...
Tom: theres some AWESOME info/pics of XM in the A/V forum...

I know what you mean. I wanted to boost FM performance also, but I couldn't figure where to stick the coat hanger. hehe. Honestly, when getting a new head unit installed in the Explorer I asked the kid at the counter at Cartoys if something was available. His answer was unfortunately no. That won't stop me from exploring further. A workmate installed a FUBA brand antenna on his VW and claimed it was much better. Good luck looking and let us know the results. Sieze ya.

I guess I'll have to look around, what I mostly want it for is so I get better reception for 102.7 WNEW, pretty ammusing station. I don't really get hot 97, depends on where I am. Even some local stations I don't get that good so I need some kinda boost, thanks for the help

I had the the Pioneer DEH-P8400MP installed. Left the Bose speakers in for the moment which arent bad but the head unit can do soo much better. It's XM ready so the decoder is in the trunk and the antenna is on the trunk lid. It's kida ugly but it's the best spot IMO. Ya get use to it. I'd take some pics of the install but no digicam right now. If you want to see the list of stations click here. I love this HU. plays MP3s and WMAs... I'll get pics up soon but it's no killer setup, not by far.

How does the XM thing work? My deck is XM ready, can you get any local stations on it? And are there things I have to buy and have installed?

If your head unit is EM ready, then all you need is the Decoder ($150) and the antenna for XM ($40).
It doesn't interfere with FM because you would switch source from FM or CD to XM. Just switch back to FM for local.
The install is easy if you're comfortable pulling the radio, running cables under some trim and mounting the decoder somewhere like the trunk plus some basic electrical to the decoder. Assuming this is a Pioneer and has the "bus" they use but maybe the bus is the same since your HU is XM ready, I don't know. What kind is it?
If not, you'll need the FM modulation kind which passes thru your FM receiver. It's not so bad but getting our stereo out for the first time isn't fun. There's a bit of a learning curve.
