Importance of E brake

You know when i bought my 03 CL Type S...i knew the e-brake was a bit funky. It just never worked basically. I think it was there for decoration...so i always left the car in gear when i parked. Seemed to do the job...i did want to get around to fixing it but there was the wheels, than the headers, and so i never got around to adjusting it.

Well, last nite i parked my car in the driveway which is sloped into the garage. I than heard a buddy of mine pull up in his S2000 yelling for me to hurry up and get outside and i thought WHY. To my surprise, the car slowly creeped back down the slope and into the garage. garage door looked like a memory foam mattress.

I have pics...i'll post them later as soon as i find the cable to the computer.

I followed Jens directions for adjusting the e-brake and had a question about how much tension should there be when doing the fine adjustment in the center console. I took pictures of that too. I'll do the rough adjustment later....after i jack the car up and spin the wheels to see how the fine adjustment is working.

Good luck with adjusting your parking brake.

For future reference...you NEVER want to force your transmission to hold your car on a hill. If your parking brake is not working, fix it ASAP. Fixing/adjusting a parking brake is much cheaper and easier than replacing/rebuilding a transmission. I know of a couple instances where people have killed their transmissions parking on too many hills and relying on 1st gear to hold the car. In doing this, you're just causing unnecessary strain to the transmission by not using the parking brake.

My car is parked in my driveway 90% of the time and it's pretty steep so I always leave it in 1st with the brake up all the way. . . .Is that bad. . .Will that still cause strain on my tranny??

As long as the brake holds the car, you're not putting strain on the tranny. I've made it a habit (I also park on a hill 90+% of the time) with any car to set the parking brake first, make sure it holds the car, then put it in gear (or park for the automatics). If the brake's holding the car, there will be little strain on the tranny, but it's best to engage the brake first, then put the car in gear or park.

on a side note, the parking brake in the CL-S6 should be fully engaged in 6-10 clicks.

Its not a big deal in manuals to have it parked like that. Thats the P for a manual. Reverse is usually preferred for parking though.

I ALWAYS use the parking brake, even in level parking lots. I only put it in gear on steep driveways/hills, and even then I engage the brake ALL THE WAY, then put it into gear.

Like previously mentioned much better for the brake to hold the car, plus I dont want to worry about forgetting that its in gear everytime I park and stall it cuz i let off the clutch.
