I'm a proud man! but a little confused?

My baby made me proud today .. I outran a 20 something blonde driving a 3 series today. Its tough to say who was hotter, the car or the girl .. I'd have to go with the girl. But anyways, so like I'm dead stop at a light, I see this bimmer on my right, rollin up real slow tryin to time the light so she can blast off. The light turns green and we are off. I beat her by about half a car atleast to the next light .. I mean I could see her in my side view mirror by the time we got to the next light. I was happy She turned at that light

Anyways, what I am confused about is that she was pullin on me, and so I dropped into SS and into second, and started redlining .. and then it was kinda like a skipping feeling, almost like it feels when you are testing out the governor at 130 .. but a little different, I was expecting SS to automatically upshift into 3rd, but it didnt instead that skipping thing .. so I had to push it up into third .. is that normal?

ps - oh yeah, dont respond if all u wanna do is pick on me for gettin my cheap thrills competing with women jk

please explain ? I'm fairly clueless when it comes to things that deal with the engine .. aka, things that matter

Sport shift will not upshift automatically at all. It will keep bouncing off the rev limiter until you manually shift up. The rev limiter is just that. It keeps you from over reving your engine past redline to prevent damage to your engine.

Not good for acceleration but it's not going to hurt the engine. That's what it's there for.

In some cases, even when you hit the rev limiter, it WILL NOT shift even if you hit the lever to the + 2 or 3 times. Best to shift or at least hit the lever about 500 RPM's before redline. It's happened to me on more than 1 occasion.

When I first test drove the car the salesman said that the car would shift for you if the car was in SS and you were at redline/limiter for more than 30 seconds. I don't know how accurate that is but that is what he said.

Even if it does shift for you, there would be very few occasions where you would want the car to rev that high.

Even if it does shift for you after 30 seconds... GEEZZ. Even if it does it in 5 seconds. You'll be stuck in top 2nd gear for 5 full seconds, bouncing off the rev limiter, while whoever you're racing will be top of 3rd going into 4th. 5 second shifts are bad. Unless you want to shift (just like a manual), use D5.

lol yeah i wasnt planning on lettin it skip for that long .. I didnt intend to let it skip at all and thats why I was confused. I had imagined that it would upshift right before it hit the limiter so as to maximize the accel. but that didnt happen, so I guess from now on I'm gonna keep an eye out at the tach and upshift as soon as i get into the red ..

is that the gonna produce the best result or am I better of upshifting into 3rd before it gets into the red on the 2nd?

You should shift just before it hits the red to maximize your power.
