Igniter Inverter

I took my 01 cl-s in to get the timing belt replaced the other day as well as to have them check out a recently burnt out headlight. They informed me that its not the bulb, but rather the Igniter/Inverter needs to be replaced. I think they wanted around $600 for the job.

It seems like an easy DIY repair, but I'm not sure exactly how to do it, or more importantly where to find a replacement part. If anyone could steer me in the right direction, thatd be great. (I used the search but to little or no avail)

Also, what exactly does this part do? Since I now need to replace my bulbs as well, any suggestions? (I'd like to keep it legal)

The HID bulbs need more power to glow so bright, so you need an inverter/ballast to up the watts. That's what it does. You can pick up a new OEM ballast online. Google oemacuraparts. I got mine for about $315 US. It's very easy to install. There's a DIY. Do a search.

Or if 300 is a little steep (which is still cheaper then the dealer), you can always grab one from a junkyard... Lots of 2G CL's are finding their way into the yards lately. You can call your local yards (use the phone book), or go online here:

Or you could buy an aftermarket D2R HID kit (new bulbs and ballast) and replace both sides for half the price of one new ballast. This is what I did. I still have the good OEM one if you're interested in buying used.

If all else fails just source a ballast from another car that uses D2R bulbs for HIDs...I'm using IS300 ballasts and haven't had a problem yet. (knock on wood)

I've seen the DIY for replacing the ballasts and it was super helpful. I bought 2 used ballasts off of Craigslist... one of which did not work and the other worked for 2 months before failing! I just bought 2 aftermarket (phillips) ballasts, but I don't know how to wire a harness to fit our cars. Can anyone who has done this do a quick DIY or diagram? Thanks!
