I need help with my misfires!

Before yall get pissed at me for not searching, that is all I have been doing for the past few weeks.

I have misfire codes for cyl 2,3,4,5,6, random, and all cyl misfires. I have replaced and switched a few coils around. I have also cleaned the EGR passages and adjusted the valve lash, and the timing belt was supposedly done by the dealer I bought it from a year ago at ~120,000 miles.

My thoughts are either: Clogged/bad EGR, bad coils, valve train damage from money shifting 2nd-3rd, or the timing belt was not actually done. Which is the most likely cause, and how do I test for each problem. Presumably I can't try unplugging coils, since it's showing misfires on all cylinders.

have you ever mis shifted and over-revved?

i take it this just came up recently and has not been happening since you got the car a year ago? You could try unplugging one coil pack at a time to see if the engine note changes. Maybe there are still bad coils there. Or it might be time for a compression test.

at this point and time; you need to do a compression and a leak down test.

these test are very inexpensive and can tell you what is going on internally.

i wouldnt worry too much about HOW it happened; as you're sure you didnt mis-shift.

the next step is to get those test done to see where your car stands.

He didnt explain The Money Shift, correctly.

The Money shift is going from 4th to 2nd. Mechanically over-revving the engine.

it takes money to get the car back up and running; hence the name.

a friend recently blew my engine by doing EXACTLY this.
i had several misfires at idle.
car sounded like it was cammed at idle.

My exhaust valves in both heads were DESTROYED!
the piston came up too far and slapped the valves, bending the stems.

I swapped heads from a 07-09 MDX 3.7l.

Read about my swap here:

I didnt do those test because I saw my buddy perform "The Money Shift"
I knew that my heads were fucked.

in this case, OP doesnt know if he is even losing compression. and thats where I would start with his car, compression and leak down test.

3 easy ways to search out the misfires.

Make sure your getting good spark at plugs.
Compression check.
And check injectors are firing.

Not any of those things then you are looking at wiring or ecu.

Okay. I figured I needed a compression test. I've never done one before, is it something I can do in my driveway or should I wait to have my boss help me at work? (I'm interning at a performance shop) I hope the results are good. 180-200psi is what I should be looking for, yes?

Nevermind, Compression tests are easy. I'm tired and I don't know why I thought different.

Anyway, after reading Justnspace's thread, I'm 90% sure I'll need new heads. Anybody got the hookup on j37 or 35A8 heads? Or just 35 heads and Type S cams? If I'm going to put that much sweat and blood into my car, I'm for damn sure going to make it better, not just fix it.

You can't use newer heads. They have the exhaust manifold cast into the head. J32a2 heads are what you want. You could gasket match the next heads and port the runners on up. 3.7 cams....can't remember from what engine.

Damn it. Can I use older (say, 2003 Odyssey) 35 heads and A8 cams? Or are 32 heads my only option? If I'm going to get this involved in this car, I want to make it faster while I'm at it.

those test are needed for you to be sure.

you dont wanna tear into your heads only to find out that they were good.

i literally saw my friend money shift.
however, yours is still unknown.

Stick with J32A2 heads and 3.7 cams. fsttyms could tell you what cams. MDX (J35A3)and odyssey heads are nearly identical to the J32A2 but apparently have a slightly smaller exhaust port.
Get some J32A2 heads from carpart.com but keep your 6speed heads because the new heads will likely come from an automatic CL-S and you'll need a few things from the 6speeds heads i believe.

Did a compression test on the front three cylinders, and the numbers were 190, 140, 120. I didn't do the back, because theyre harder to get to and I pretty much if one cyl was bad, I was just going to get new heads for the performance upgrade.

@gnuts: If I'm going to just get stock heads, would new valves be a better option? Just get new cams, valves, and the heads machined? (Valve seats redone and heads magnafluxed and all that.) Just for simplicities sake?

Thanks for the help guys!

Find a used J35A3 motor (01-02 MDX) & swap that in over just replacing the heads.. You'll have more power that you want for roughly the same price as swapping new heads..

J35A3's are quite cheap from a wrecker (car-parts.com).. You'd have to swap over some sensors from the 6 speed motor but nothing serious..

Check my thread if you'd like..

Good luck

I got frustrated with this same problem a few years back. I finally broke down and adjusted the valves (some were way off) mostly because it was time. I didn't expect it to remedy the misfire problem but it did. Do u remember how much adjustment was needed during your valve job?

Yes, and it wasn't significant. The car runs about the same now as it did before the adjustment, plus there were checkmarks drawn on the cam cradles, so I think it may have been done before. But I re-did it anyway just to make sure.

Teh CL: I know you pulled the tranny out along with the motor, but can the swap be done avoiding that step? I really don't want to mess around with that bs if I do the swap. Also, can the clutch/pressure plate be completely replaced during the swap without having to pull the tranny? Finally, how long did it take you to do the swap and get it driving?

I had the same problem. Ended up being bent valves. I was losing compression in like 4 cylinders. Anyways, got a new motor with slightly built head (still have the old motor lying around at my friend's shop). Car runs better and faster now. I guess Everything happens for a reason
