i don't have an auto, but if i did, i'd treat the tranny as fragile as possible

Not a good idea. Too much stress keeps getting put on the tranny while shifting back into gear.

Shifting to neutral and back when you are at a stop is fine. Doing so when the engine is under load however is not. That will place additional stress on your transmission and there is a chance that after time it will become damaged. Question answered.

Oh yeah, reving the hell out of your engine when it is in neutral and you're stopped is also bad.
1)You should never rev the engine when it is not under load
2)It will make you look like a giant douch wanna be ricer.

the best way to stop is to go about 80mph then drop it into R!

Too bad it's impossible to do in both the automatic and manual transmissions!

when you go from neutral to drive the most ware happens on the clutches, needle bearigns, gear teeth and motor mounts, because there is a load trasfer and you can feel the motor rock as it connects. you also get wear on the ring and pinion and all of the shafts, because its like taking a shaft and putting a rotational force on and off everytime, your weaking the metal and it can break under high loads, or what your really weaking is the splines where is connects to something, that is the weakest part of any transmission.

So, there is MORE wear and tear when shifting into D5 from N when your car is at a full stop relative to when shifting from D5 to D4 when the car is moving? Just trying to make sense of all this.

yeah all your doing when going from d5 to d4 is tell the trans that you don't want 5th gear thats all, it keeps it in 4th, but when go into neutral everything changes.

going down a hill in neutral in either auto or MANUAL is dumb. when you're moving your car shuold ALWAYS be in gear. If you don't believe me then go take a professional driving course. better yet, you should never be in neutral unless you need to push your car.

say you're at a stop light in neutral, some car comes flying behind you at a fast rate, it's quick to release brake and add gas to move the car, than shift the car into gear and then release brake and add gas. This goes same for stick shifts. Should always be in gear.

and my pet peeves are ricers that stick it in neutral and back to D and back to neutral thinking they're stick. :ghey: :gheyhug:
So you put your car in first gear with the clutch pedal depressed while sitting at the light?

What, you've NEVER EVER given a rev to the guy next to you at the light? I love how EVERYTHING is "ricer" these days. x infinite

Don't give bad advice. 5K in neutral and then pop it into D is more realistic. Won't rev over 5K in neutral.
