i HAVE TO Post this message.. im soo pissed

ok I only ran 90 Miles with half of my tank of gas.... (ALL LOCAL no freeway at all) and i dont reallly rev it since the gas is so expensive. This wasting gas problem has been with me ever since i bought the car...
is it something wrong with my car???
ok everytime i fill up my tank.. the meter will start going down after i drive 20 miles and my avalon could go at least 40 before the needle starts to go down. and EVERYTHING i turn off my engine and the gas needles is lower than before i turn off the engine... EVEN THO I just drive for a VERY short distance....

and you can't really compare the gas gauge to an avalon's considering they're two totally different makes and probably a different brand of gauge with different calibrations to different size tanks.

as long as your total mileage/gallon isn't too bad, the gauge doesnt' mean anything except tell you that you're empty or full (even if it reads 1/4, you don't have exactly 1/4 tank left, you probably have more considering our tanks read empty when there's like 4 gallons left).

The gauge doesn't mean anything. Divide miles by gallons. This car get great mileage if you have the willpower to drive it like a Yugo. Remember it's 260 horses. It's not an ecomomy car. The Avalon had about 60 fewer horses. My wife had an Avalon and the CL gets better mileage. It's your choice.

Do you have a CAI and reset the ECU??

Maybe you injectors are dirty??

I notice poor gas mileage when i not buy gas from the BIG three (exxon, bp and texaco).

I am not a big lead foot, except on the hiway, but i get 200+ by half and 350+ on a full tank, but i fill up to the rim.

I am averaging about 190 to the half way mark on the fuel gauge and I don't drive conservatively. With CAI I am getting between 24-26 depending how many times I venture into V-Tec land. Sumpin must be wrong.

Since day one, March 28,2001, I have never gotten less then 20 MPG or less then 300 miles per tank. This is mostly with everyday driving and no AC on. This past weekend, I went from So. CT to Keene, NH- mostly highway. I averaged 70-80 MPH and was able to get 26.7 MPG. I was quite pleased.

simple test for mpg.

on any early Sun morning,

1)fill tank next to a freeway (highway, interstate, whatever)
2) Drive on highway for 75 miles @ 75 mph, turn around and drive back to same station.
3) fill up at same pump.
4) check mpg

I'll bet you'll get over 30 mpg's.
If this is the case then you have LEADFOOT problems around town.

I've yet to get under around 24.5mpg since I got my car in April.

It's the best mpg car in the family (three GM cars). It usually averages around 26.5mpg.

I got 29 at last fillup.

My driving between fillups includes a couple VTEC hits and average shifting at around 3500-4000rpm.

Two big things:

I don't use SS and I don't use the AC (well, rarely).

I bet if I left the AC on all the time and used SS to shift it differently instead of it's pre-programmed sweet spots, my mpg would be a bit lower.

I do have the radio on all the time though.

How much of a difference does the AC make? I know I've always averaged about 16 MPG, but I have the AC on most of the time. I also tend to use VTEC for passing more often than I'd like to with gas prices going up.

I've been getting around 340-350 miles/tank. AC is on the majority of the time as i like it cold Don't use SS too much except merges onto the highway and/or when I'm pissed and want to drive fast. 50miles/day (40highway,10local). Usually drive between 70-80(it's hard not to

Im getting at least 20 mpg. I drive hard with ac on all the time, almost all city driving. If you are getting less than 20-22 and you drive like a grandma, then take your car to the dealership and have em check it out...

I used to be able to pull about 350 miles on a tank when I drove freeways all day. Now that I've moved any my 20 miles commute is all city stop and go driving I can't pull anything over 280 on a tank.

I have this same damn problem. I am ALWAYS looking at my gas gauge and it is always dropping. If i am home and i drive maybe 2 miles to the store it drops so much. I just can't understand how it can drop 2 lines when i drive only a few miles. I have been wondering the same thing for a long time but never got around to posting it.

possible reasons:

1. some gas station uses inferior octane gas as the premium one... some gas stations in NY got caught doing that. I am sure there aer others.
2. tire pressure
3. it is getting hotter, so the AC counts, right?

i only use AC when there is fine chicks sitting in my car otherwise NO AC FOR ME.. try to save gas.
and i have been going to the same gas station to get gas for years and it should not have problems and my avalon i can get over 350 miles with full tank of gas for local and 400-470 freeway.(TANK Is a lil bit bigger than CLS)
even tho ther eis something wrong with my tire pressure but it should not make that much big of difference

SO what should i tell the dealer to check when i bring my car back ?
and would it help if i reset my ecp rightnow? i installed my CAI 2 month ago.

Jens told us that setting the ECU is really not necessary. If you want fast results then disconnect the negative lead to the battery. Jens said that the ECU would eventually remap itself to the new settings. I believe that 2 months would qualify for enough time. I did disconnect it because I wanted to see what would happen right away.

I would just tell the dealer that you are experiencing extremely poor mileage and to please check the car.

THIS TOPIC is like trying to kill Dracula, but there aren't any wooden stakes around...

1. My mileage sucks big time around town. I compared the mileage that my wife gets in the same loop with her 4-cylinder '95 Altima and I get the same or better gas mileage. The route consists of driving 10 miles in heavy in-town stop-and-go driving. She gets 13 MPG in the loop (30-45 minutes to go 10 miles) vs the 16 MPG that I get.

2. I have gotten around 13 MPG with my foot it in and in urban driving and up and down hills. I thought everyone was "full of it", until I took a long drive on a combination of freeways and hwys. I got over 30 MPG driving about 80 MPH on the freeway sections, and only mashed the pedal a couple of times. (This was my best mileage recorded.)

3. The bulk of the "mixed" freeway and hwy. driving returns about 20 - 24 MPG. The mileage is dependent on the speed of travel, the congestion, and temptation to "blow the car out" with some full-throttle fun.

This car can easily get 10 MPH if it is stopped in bumper-to-bumper traffic going nowhere (IN fact it could get 0 MPH if it justs idles in a sig-alert). If you really are concerned about your mileage I have a sure fire solution to decide if a trip to the dealer is required.

1. Map out a known trip. Start at a "known" filling station and drive about 20-60 miles (or more). Make sure that you fill-up to the top of the tank, and return from your driving loop to the exact same pump. Let the pump click-off, or top-it-off. (Just do the starting and ending fill-up procedures the SAME WAY!) Make sure to reset trip counter A or B to zero at the fill-up, then write the miles you have driven on the receipt with the galons required to refill.

2. Now compute your gas mileage: Miles_driven / Gallons_used = MPG.

3. If you mileage is really lousy, and you think your previous car or someone elses would get much better mileage, go to a rental car agency (find a discount coupon). Go get a Grand Prix, or some other 6 cylinder vehicle, and drive the same route. (Or heck, if you are married or have a girl friend, swap cars for the day).

4. Drive the exact same route, and try to use the same style of driving on the route (Air on, Automatic trans, light throttle, etc).

Compare gas mileage between vehicles!

If you mileage is way below a 6 cylinder vehicle, take your car to your dealer if it is broken in, and have them check it out.

If I can get better gas mileage than my wife's Altima (in the same conditions, our car can't be that bad).

BTW -- if you have less than 1500 miles on the car, all bets are off -- it may not be broken in.

Before I moved to the "suburbs" my milage per tank was almost always right around 230 miles. I drove however I wanted (frequently floored it) always with AC on.

My best milage to date was last weekend on a trip down to VA Beach I was able to keep the car on cruise control at 80 MPH and only came off the cruse control to break for stupid drivers maybe 5 times I got 220 Miles per half tank!!

I dunno about all you drivers out there, but I consistently get about 315-325 miles right when the gas light turns on. My work commute is mostly highway (~80mph). City driving about 40% of the time. I don't drive too conservative, but I don't push the car all the time (especially in the city)... just when needed (i.e. on/off ramps, changing lanes, flexing, getting to my destination on time). I don't use SS that often tho, probably 3x avg per week. VTec avgs once a day.

BTW, to those that have PDA's... I use mine to track my gas efficiency (mileage/gallons) as well as payment & station location.

I don't know how you can only hit VTEC range once a day on average driving this car, I just have to hear that VTEC kick in a little more often. Maybe that's why I only get a max of about 250 miles per tank. My daily commute is also mostly on the highway, but in rush hour bumper-to-bumper traffic. A lot of people are getting better gas mileage with the addition of headers and a CAI, I think mine would be much worse. I just love stepping on it every chance I get.

I drive a grand total of 8 miles to my work and it is a two lane road and the speed limit is 55mph. Most of the time in the morning it is bumper to bumper traffic the whole way, but when I go out I drive on the freeway at least two to four times a week and I still average at the worst 21mpg and when I drive mostly highway miles I get at least 29 to 33 mpg(speed limit 70mph). I dont drive like a grandma most of the time(unless the good ol cops are following me since I live near the police department).

Couldn't find a 0-60mph time for the 1993 but the 1997 0-60mph time was 7.5 secs (of course with manual).. I would think it would be 16 secs or a little under for the 1/4 mile time

i have an aem cai and i regularly do full tank trips on the highway. last tank with probably at least 15 blasts to redline and remained floored i got 30.4 mpg. when all my driving is in town i usually get 24-25 mpg. i am happy with the mpg. fill it all the way to the spout and mine has gone as far as 85 miles without moving from max full(above the mark)didnt rset my ecu either.later

If you really want to get depressed (perhaps for a few it will work the other way), just figure out how much it costs you for each mile you drive. If you can, compare it with the numbers for several months ago. Then estimate it for an SUV of your choice. Ah, it is good news, bad news. Of course, for psychological reasons we don't want to go too far with this the other way. We might end up buying 10-speeds.

I'm not so sure all of the "blasts" to redline were done with the needle stuck at the top of the indicator. I've got betting money, that this person is not going to get 85 miles of travel without the needle moving from the top IF he does non-stop full-pedal accelerations.

Let me know when and where I can collect my money...

BTW -- Sometimes, this forum reminds me of the Olympics -- they toss out the high and low scores and keep the scores in the middle.

Just got back from LA (smell-a)

~200 miles round trip and my gas mileage was 28.8. I kept up w/the flow of traffic so I wasn't near the legal speed limit.
