I Didn't Buy it Because....
What other cars did everyone consider, and what made you deceide against them? Forget about the CL for a minute. Here's my list...
Dodge Stealth/Mitsu 3k GT Dopey spoiler cheaply built.
Chrysler 300M, Too big. That fire in her belly gave me indigestion. My insurance agent has one. Rattled during the test drive.
Acura Integra- too small. I hate compacts. Get hit by a Grand Marquis you're toast.
Acura TL- I had a sedan since I was 16 (87 legend 4dr) I had enough of that.
Honda Accord V6- too common. Same with all the Toyotas.
F Body Z28 and Trans-AM - rattled during test drive. Too much body roll. I swear to God the inside smelled like mothballs. I drove with the windows open in 40 degree weather.
Ford Mustang GT- Again too many of them. No class. I don't like the boy racer image.
BMW 328 something... Too pricey. My neighbor has one and if I got one he would never leave me alone. RWD, good for performance but here in PA we get snow. I don't want to switch tires all over the place.
Mercury Mystique/Contour- I read about so many problems with them on the internet I got scared. I originally didn't want to spend more than $17,000 on a new car.
Cougar- All looks no power. My '87 legend could have toasted that thing.
Lincoln LS V8, I kept thinking about my dad's Mark VIII and the wiper problem... and the CD changer problem... and the taillight problem.... and the alternator/battery problem....For $40,000 can't they connect the mirror to something other than the windshield? It gets above 80 the glue melts and the mirror dangles violently. Unnaccetable for a $40,000 car. Can't forget the center mirror problem...
Audi... didn't like their styling. One dealer around here (Dick Horrigan) tends to be shady. My dad had a 6000 turbo back in the late 80's and had numerous problems. I don't like the goofy Olympic symbol on the front.
Mercedes, too pricey, RWD.

I considered the following:
- Accord EX V6 (not classy or powerful enough)
- Solara (same as above)
- 330ci (awesome car, but out of my price range)
- TL (love the car, but couldn't resist the extra 35 hp of the CL)
- Eclipse GT V6 (too small, cheaply built)
- Another Sebring LXi (cheaply built, not powerful enough)

If I were you I'd keep the CL. Its the best car you can find. If you want to wait till Mid-July and get the RS-X you can but I'd rather have the CL. With the RS-X you can suppe it up more because its cheaper. Overall stay with the CL.

Well, I'll keep the CL until it either falls apart, or I come into alot of money and can get a Mercedes. But with the economy about to tank, I don't think that'll happen.
I won't mod it. That's for the professionals, not me. But we don't know what will be available in four years. I like to keep my options open.

Judging by the number of hits, people seem to think this is "Why I didn't buy the CL" type of deal. Also, I didn't consider the is300 either. The clear taillights just don't do it for me. It has the ass of a Neon, the body of a Catera, and the front end of a Thunderbird.

The short list:
Audi S4: Came close to buying it, but was a little disappointed with the performance after all the hype. With a better deal, I'd be driving it.
BMW 330xi: couldn't test drive a manual because dealer wasn't getting one and was reluctant to spend the money without a test drive.
Audi A4 2.8 quattro: Too many people I know have one; a nice car, but I couldn't get excited about it.
Others I considered less seriously: other bimmers (didn't want rear wheel drive); Volvo C70 (decided I wasn't a Volvo type of person); VW Passat (too slow)

All cars were 2000 models looked at around March-April 2000:
Merc C230 Kompressor - horrid engine noise, especially for a Merc. Basically, it seemed no nicer than my $25K Accord V6, yet it cost $34K, and it was much smaller.
Merc C280 - solves the engine noise problem, but for $36K, base price it had no sunroof, no leather, etc. Heinously overpriced vehicle.
Contour SVT - had that cheap domestic car feel to it. Way over-hyped in the performance dept. LOTS of road noise and it rode like a pickup.
Miata - why spend $26K for a 140hp roadster when you can spend $32K for a 240hp roadster? Plus, I BARELY fit in the thing.
Integra GS-R - Interior is looking pretty dated. No keyless entry? Give me a break, Acura. A little too small.
Integra Type R - No sunroof? Ok, I can live with that. But no cruise control? HELL NO! I like road trips too much
TL - didn't really want a 4 door, and the extra 35hp of the CL would have been enough to sway me anyways.
I knew after I drove the CL-S that I was gonna get it, but I had to at least drive some other cars. For me personally, nothing out there even comes close to being the value that this car is

I was driving a 4wd F150 for several years (OK, no throwing of objects...I hunt/fish and needed something that served the purpose; heck it was like a country cadillac!), but my commute became too difficult in the big truck that ate gas, and took up the whole lane on our ever slimming hiway lanes.
So...I looked at the Maxima - not a bad car, ugly butt, too expensive to add options.
S2000 - $$$ over MSRP. Also not too practical as a daily driver.
Honda Accord V6 - for a few $K more, the type S.
------------------
01 CL-S San Marino Red/Black, K&N drop in, no nav, rear wing, otherwise stock thus far, has an appetite for Bavarian cars.

These are the cars I considered...
-Lexus IS300
-Lincoln LS V8
-Chrysler 300M
-Pontiac Bonneville SSEI
-Lexus ES300
-Audi S4
The Pontiac, Lincoln, Audi and Lexus ES300 were ruled out on price when considered with the options I wanted. The IS300 was too small. The Chrysler was too much like my old car (Intrepid). Then I found out about the CL Type S and it was as if no other car existed.
Notice how all those cars are sedans and I wind up getting a coupe. That's how much I liked the Type S. I also decided I wanted a change since my previous two cars were sedans.

hate to admit but a IS300 but no real leather, too small,Love the rims , but no navi(most important) and lack of power vs. the Type S , oh and to finalize shitty treatment at the dealer, apparenlty they didn't think I was serious and kept asking how old I was eventhogh I had a 10K check in my hand ready to buy that day. (thank god I didn't)
I got the type S because of the 260hp, the perforated seats, Navi and HID's.

I have considered the following:
Volvo V70 T5: i know i know, it is a wagon, but they didn't have S60 yet last year. Actually I liked the look.
Saab 9-5 Aero: great look and good performace, but it is not worth the final price of over 42k!!
Lexus IS300: loved it, but not as fast CLS... although I love the look, but I want a car with a more mature look. I hated the manual shift button being on the steering wheel, it is awkard and confusing at times.
BMW 330i: great car, actually worth the 40k. In lots of asian movies, only the villains and bad guys drive Bimmers, hehehe...
Nissan Maxima SE 27 Ann: almost bought this one, but the Acura dealer talked me out of it
Personally, I still think this car has the most performace for the buck ratio.

When looking last Spring, I considered the following vehicles:
* Honda Accord V6 EX (too common, only 200hp)
* Honda Prelude Type SH (only 200hp, but it was a manual, didn't like the interior though)
* Audi S4 (disappointed in the power, but it was a manual, too much at my dealership)
* Audi A4 (Nice styling, didn't really scream out at me though, too common where I live)
* Audi TT (too small, wasn't impressed)
* Acura Integra GS-R (too small, wasn't the type of coupe I was looking for)
* Acura Integra Type R (same as GS-R)
* Acura TL (wasn't looking for a sedan, but I did enjoy the testdrive)
* BMW 3** (anything BMW is too common and way overpriced where I live)
* Lexus IS300 (not my kind of style, did enjoy the testdrive though)
* Lexus GS300 (could not afford, but if I could have I would own it now)
I guess that is enough...there were more, but I don't feel like typing and explaining anymore right now...besides I have to work sometime

i considered:
1) accord v6 coupe
2) prelude sh
3) is300
didn't go w/ the prelude cuz it was similar to the integ i have now, except w/ more hp and better handling. wasn't willing to spend close to 28k for it
didn't get the accord cuz i could get the cl-s for just a few grand more...so that took it outta the picture
didn't get the is300 cuz it wasn't stick, and that car NEEDS to be stick considering its set up...plus for 33K, it wasn't worth the price w/ such little luxury. now if the is300 were 28k like the cl-s, then it would be worth it!

nissan maxima 2000 would have been my 3rd, no way

honda accord v6 (to much money for a hoda when acura cl-s was like 5 grand more)
mitsu eclipse spyder- wanted 3 grand over sticker-cock suckers
acura tl-had 4 door cars for 5 years, wanted a 2 door, only car that i wish i had gotten over the cl due to such easy modifications.
then the cl-s came out and blew me away.
ILL TAKE MY CL-S FOR 3 YEARS, THEN GET MY GS430 OR TL-S AND ILL BE HAPPY

Acura Integra Type-R & Honda S2000: two VERY great cars, fun to drive, etc. only gripe is that my local dealers markup at least $3000 for both. My brother has a PY ITR though, so I can drive that anytime
Honda Prelude SH: even at invoice, it's still not worth it...
Chevrolet Camaro SS/Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6: hehe don't ask why ;p only performs good in a straight line IMO, cheesy interior, Lego-like button controls, etc.
Mitsubishi Eclipse GT V6: kind of pricey for what it is, plus there's Mitsubishi/Chrysler reliability (those words don't go together :rolleyes
Nissan Maxima Anniversary Edition: probably the nicest looking affordable sedan on the market (please don't flame me
), lots of aftermarket parts available (they even have a supercharger available..ahhh)...didn't want it because I'm tired of four doors (I also have an Integra Sedan), when loaded with similar options the CL comes standard in, the price was about the same. I chose the CL because it is what it is, enough said
Acura TL: really wanted a coupe, this was one of my decisions because the availability of a body kit (a nice one I might add
)
Honda Accord V6 EX Coupe: closest decision, it was either buy the Accord or lease the CL-S. Turned out to be around the same price and figured I'd change cars in a few years anyways. I love the CL-S, it's great combination of everything
Next car is a TL-S though

I've traded in my Accord EX-L V6 '00 for the CL-S ...
Was considering these cars before my eye laid upon the beauty of CL :
1. Volvo S60
2. Acura A4 turbo charged
3. BMW 330i
3. BMW 740i (not iL).
4. MUNI bus
------------------
'01 CL type-S.
Why drink and drive, when you can smoke and fly?

The only car i was considering, was a jeep wrangler sahara. I know I know, your probaly sying wtf. But my mom wnted a TL so i tag along to the dealership over X-mas break. Ive read things on cls and thought they were fast and nice looking. So my dad of course did not want me to get a car that rolled over when u took a corner at 15 mph. So we test drove it, bought the very same car i test drove and havent had a secons thought about any other car sense, except the new M3.

I also considered the following:
1. Solara(influenced by parents b/c they owned a camry)
2. Accord V6 Coupe(nice but wanted something with a little more kick in the engine)
3. IS300( too much for all the options, also I wanted a 2-Door, tired of having four doors)
4. Used 3000 GT(nice but wanted some kind of trunk space)
5. S2000(inside too small)
Choose the CL-S after I test drove it and saw all the options that came standard.
