how is the stock alarm?

hi all,

just got my cls not too long ago and decided i wanted to start doing some small things here and there to it. how is the stock alarm on it? i mean i dont plan on making my car say steal me but i plan on gettign a avic-d3 soon so it would be nice to know if it does a good job. i kind of wanted to get remote start on it since so i can warm up my car before i head out since i live in washington and its usually freakkin cold haha but i have the six speed and i dont really want to get the bypass. one of my friends told me about some girl having the bypass on her honda and someone left it in gear so when she started it she happened to be in front of it and it basically ran her over thank god she is still alive

so yeah any input on the alarm would be great

I don't think it's too good - doesn't register breaking the glass, if I recall. When my headlights got stolen, they smashed the window, leaned in and popped the hood, disconnected the battery and no alarm...didn't go off until I reconnected my battery and opened the driver door.

It's ok if you add some shock sensors to it. There are posts in the FAQ about that.
Without them anyone can just smash your windows & take whatever is inside without the alarm ever going off.

If you go aftermarket there are some options for a stick. The real setups have safety features designed for a stick & are impossible for anything bad to happen. These systems have features like the car will only start if the car is not in gear & the parking brake is on. If these are not met the car will not remote start.
What you heard is the WRONG way to have a remote start put on a stick.

There was a big thread on that not to long ago. May want to search it out.

If you want remote start you only have a few options since only a few have the safety features built in. Compustar, & Clifford.

DEI makes most car alarms, just under different names. Anything Viper will work fine. I've had experience with viper systems.

^ I added a couple of shock sensors to the existing 'security system' and it seems to do the job pretty well.

Beware of the phantom alarm. For the past couple months, my alarm has been randomly going off in the middle of the night forcing my neighbors to call the police on my ass cause they keep thinking someone wants to steal a 2001 CL-S wtih 150k miles on it.

Ha, I hate my factory alarm.

here in edmonton, the most popular systems are the compustar and ultrastart. they both feature manual transmission 'reservation' modes (safety features so that you cannot remote start in gear). the higher end 2-way systems are also pretty good alarms, with built in shock sensors, and multiple accessory functions.

IT SUCKS. i had a pioneer avic also. its long gone. trust me if they want it, they WILL GET it with anything short of you having a rottweiler in your passenger seat at all times. no alarm or system will deter them, they are animals. if you get it, make SURE you disconnect the detachable faceplace and bring it with u at all times. the alarm doesnt even go off unless the glass breaks, they ripped out my headlights and the alarm didnt even go off until they broke the window and took my avic. dont kid yourself

Here's a (sort of) working link I found for installing a shock sensor:

Yeah the pics are gone but it's not that hard to do. I have 2 wired in my car. 1 in the front near the headlights, & the other under the dash.
