How much time before empty????

How many miles can you drive once the low gas light comes on.
Our tank can hold 17 gallons... I filled up on "empty" and it only gave me 14.5

Does the light come on with 2.5 gallons left?

Thanks,
L

Yes the light comes on with a few gallons left. You're not really empty until the car doesn't move anymore. It's designed as a safety device so idiots don't get stuck on the side of the road.

About a year ago I was going for maximum mileage on a tankful and ran the gauge down to the pin. I was stunned when after I filled up I still had a half gallon left. BTW I got 470 miles out of that tankful. Depending on how you look at it the gauges are very pesimistic, or optomistic!

I don't believe that the light comes on when you have a specific amount of "gallons left". I've come up with anywere between 2-3 gallons left, based on calculations. something you just have to figure out for yourself and find a 'comfort zone'.

I tested this, as soon as the light comes on there is 3 gallons left in the tank. The most I have put in this car is 15.5 and the light had only come on about 30 miles before. ( I am getting about 25mpg )
I has been the same on ever honda my family has ever had. that is just their standard

I usually fill up when it's convenient after the light comes on. I don't think i've ever used more than 1.5 gallons of the 3 left.

I don't depend on my gas gauge for accuracy other than the light - the first half goes down nice and slow, but the 2nd half of my tank will just FLY down. I swear it moves a notch after just a 5 mile drive. The warning light seems to come on at just about 3 gallons consistently though.
