How loud are our injectors?
Got my car back from the valve overhaul... Car runs great but seems a little putt putt from the exhaust when I'm sitting in the car and the rpms seem low, this is after an hour of driving.
Also, after the hour drive I popped the hood and the engine sounded noisey. Like there was a lot of sound tapping/ticking sound which I'm guessing is the injectors but I never heard it so loud before.
Is this normal.. I've read that our injectors are loud, but I might make a video to see what people think.

Maybe they did not adjust the valves correctly? What you can do is take a long screwdriver or pies of wood, like part of a brrom handle and set it on the valve cove and put your ear to the other end of the wood and listen, then try putting the wood near an injector and see if it is comming from there? You should be able to figure out where it is coming from, or pretty close that is!

when i had them done on my honda, they were noisey for a few hundred miles and then they were quiet.

Well I'm just saying, if it's just meant to be loud that is one thing. But my valves have all just been worked on, I'm just hoping it's meant to be like this and not a problem with the work done on my car.

this is really easy to find out all you have to do is touch it when your car is running and you can feel the ticking, mine does this but not that bad whereas others have said its almost all you can hear its gotten so bad.

You talking about the valve or the purge thing against the firewall.

its a little connector, if I was at home I'd take a picture but there is a DIY is the 2nd gen TL side to fix it, they might have pictures there

Is this the right sound for our cars? Is this just the injector sound?
Please let me know if I need to go back to the dealership and tell them these noises aren't right.

The video works.
There is something wrong with the valvetrain. NO WAY should it be that loud. You can tell when you let off the gas and the engine started to return to idle. They did not adjust them right or something man. I'd take that back. When you got it back from them were they there when you started it? I can not believe they let that out the door like that. I'm not real familiar with the valvetrain on the j32a2, but that ain't right.
This may sound really dumb, but have you checked the oil in your car since you got it back?

Also sounds like there could be a little bit of an exhaust leak. Maybe? When it is idle it reminds me of a exhaust leak, but when you rev it sounds like Valves.

Ya, they changed the oil and this afternoon I checked to make sure it was at the right level. I was there on Friday and I started up the car and the guy was just like, "oh the injectors are just loud cause it's cold".
I gave him a look and was like, ok, well I need to drive home back but if this sound doesn't go away, I'll be coming back next week to figure this out.
Also, I was driving it today and if I'm going about 60 and cruise in 3rd at higher rpms you can hear a loud ticking sound coming from the engine.
I figured it's one of two things
1.) They didn't actually fix all the bent valves.
2.) The guy didn't know how to adjust the valves right.
I know they did the work on this job, I stopped in and saw the engine torn apart but I'm guessing the techs don't do many jobs like this that often.

Knight thanks for the answers man, you always get back quick and give educated input.
As for the exhaust, I feel a slight putter when I sit in the car that I didn't feel before.
This is getting ridiculous, one bad job after another. Can shops not do a quality job anymore and take pride in their work??
So you def feel it's the valves and not the injectors? I don't want this guy feeding me a line when I go in tomorrow.

if it was me, i would spend teh extra money and replace all the valves. still think that they didnt do teh valve adjustment right. open the hood and move ur hand around the exhaust manifold (while engine is cold and just started) to feel any air escaping around the flanges.

I told them to change all the valves but the guy told me it wasn't necessary and that grinding the other ones down to sit right in the seat was as good.
Trust me, after spending $3300 between everything I wasn't trying to save $100 by having them reuse the old valves.
I was trying to toss money at them to make sure they did as much as possible while having the heads off. All the money I spent on labor I wanted to get my moneys worth.
And now I'm not sure how they're going to handle this. People just don't care, I called this guy every day and asked how things were going and to call me if they saw anything that might need replaced along the process.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't have sold me everything.
I was obviously willing to pay to have everything done right, I didn't tell them to do the job the cheapest they could. As for the valves and not replacing them all they didn't tell me this till they had the car torn apart and I told them to just replace everything since the valves are only like $15-20 a piece. But the guy said, trust me its really not necessary.
Rajca, did you have a chance to hear the video.. What does it sound like to you?? Its definitely not the injectors only, right?

I just think they need to re check the valve adjustment. Maybe have another tech at that dealer take a look.

I've never heard injectors that loud before, and I used to work on engines as big as full size trucks, with injectors the size of a red bull can.

Ok, thanks, at least I can go to the dealership tomorrow with complete confidence that it's not the injectors. I was 95% sure but I wanted to double check.
As for the head, they said there was no physical damage and the tech who did the job did the machining himself at the dealership. I mean, you take these people's word for it that they are doing right by you.
Obviously the way this is panning out, they seem to have done a poor quality job.
So do you think it just needs the valves adjusted and not have the entire thing torn apart again??

I was baffled by that to, but now I think about it I am getting pissed because labor =100% revenue. Replacing a part is less labor and some revenue from the part.
But at $100 an hour for labor they probably made more billing me more for the grinding labor than they would have just replacing the parts with new ones.

As for the valve beening take out, yes it would have to be removed to be grinded. Now that I think of it more it is likely that they put the valve on a grinder made just for that and maybe they did not use the lapping compound. But who knows. I would ask how they did it.
I think the lapping compound is more of a poor mans valve job.

OP they swapped out your motor and put a diesel in there

Well once again I am at the dealership and the tech tried telling me that the valves were noisy because they were loose and because they have the valves have to seat into the head properly. I thought valves were only that noisy when they were tight???
I have put 400 miles onto the car already and I thought that would have been plenty of time for them to seat properly.
So how miles do you think they want me to put on this car before the valves "seat" properly?

Let me also say when I quizzed the tech about the compression on the car since I forgot to get the results when I picked up the car. He said to me, "oh ya, I did a compression test, it was fine, all cylinders were around 150 and within the standard 10% variance.
Before this timing belt issue, I got 30mpg on the highway and my car ran strong. Am I correct in stating that 150 compression would be extremely poor.

Just does not sound right to me. But maybe they know something I don't. Its hard to say with out hearing it first hand. Video is good but can be misleading.

If there is only a 10% variance then your probably ok. All the cars i've done were between 145 to 180. Don't know what the J32 should be. I'm sure someone here should know that answer.

As for the service rep, he seems annoyed and I told him that I spent $3,200 there and they should know where I'm coming from and that the car sounds like a diesel.
As I left, I told him I want them to call me when they do the valve adjustment at the end of the day, i want to be there when they do it.
I know that sounds like a dick, but I have no other choice now.

Ok, got back from the dealership again after a valve adjustment and he said yes they were off. To me the car still sounds loud and it's driving me crazy. So I'm just going to give it a week and 500 more miles to see if the sound goes away.
Here is how the car sounds now compared to the other video. Anyone notice a difference?
