How are the AT holding up

It's been sometime since I've been on here. And I wanted to ask everyone, that has a current model AT, how are they holding up. Last I remember, '03-'04 that Acura put in a tranny cooler and new software. IIRC at first the software was crap, shifts were dog slow, and trannies were still taking dumps. Then they installed a tranny cooler. Then I lost track, but heard good things. Somewhere during my lapse in Acura news, that they now come with beefier trannies. True?

So I wanted to ask you guys, how are they holding up, and did they redo the software to allow the more aggressive shifting that we were all accustomed to when we first bought our cars.

there still pieces of shit. this year alone i know of personally 5-6 members whos trannies that have gone out. acura did an update to the tranny but their still blowing. a fellow az member figured out how to swap the oddessy and 3rd gen TL trannies in. i myself have a '07 TL tranny so hopefully i wont have to worry about a broke tranny.

Hey man, many thanks on the reply. BTW you think you could supply me with the link on the tranny swap. Curious to know what is involved, not like I would venture into that; be more inclined to ditch the car and go RWD MT.

honestly its very easy just drill a few holes move this around and your done. probably right around the same time to put in another cl tranny. so i think it would be worth it if you really wanted to keep the car.

Truth is, I'm curious because my AT warranty is about to run out and I'm looking to replace it with my last and final tranny. I really don't want to keep the car but figure that since I have it, and I'll be getting my last tranny, how long will the fun last with a 150 progressive shot.

If you have an acura dealer that will still do the tranny under warranty i would be kinda surprised. I thought they washed their hands clean of these atleast thats what i hear from ppl that work at acura dealers. They will still do the work, but charge full price.

Whoa, I was under the impression that they extended the warranty on the tranny's, 10 years, that would make my warranty valid till the end of this year. Correct me if I'm wrong. Reading the both of your replies now has me worried...somehow.

I laughed when I first heard this from another member that I remember years ago. He had his for 2+ years and no problem, while I had replaced my tranny twice by then. No more than a month later, light came on and wouldn't shift him out of 2nd. I can't recall where he lived, but I always attributed the trannies dieing due to overheating. Guess it depends on the temps that the car is operating in. BTW, how many miles do you have on those cars?

The 2001 has just over 108k and the 03 has just over 78k.

I don't know if its dumb luck or what but maybe the car God's are just paying me back since I had tranny problems with some of my other vehicles (BMW) (Chrysler) but both CL's have been driven 95% SS mode since I was used to driving manuals so maybe that has something to do with it. BTW there have been some others that have well exceeded these mileage figures on their CL's with the original tranny.

I just don't get it. I've cooked my tranny fluid within 10K miles. Shortly there after, MIL.

I think Acura made some significant improvements after 2005 in the replacement transmissions, but now you got to worry about rebuild issues which are common for all rebuilds. Even if you have the best rebuild ever, the statistics still say that 2-3% of rebuilds are bad due to human error in the rebuilding process. Factory manufactured transmission is the best, buy they dont make them anymore at the factory. On top of that, even in a good rebuild, you still have fundamental design issue of not enough fluid getting to clutch packs, which is somewhat improved and should not be a big issue if you drive normally, but can still theoretically become a problem for some drivers.I got 2 more years of warranty on my replacement unit, will see how long it lasts... If trany goes in 2 years and I am out of warranty, I think I will just dump the car. I think my car is already values 4000, so in 2 years it will be almost worthless to put a new transmission (better use 3-4K as a downpayment for new ride)

^^^ You've got 2 years left on your replacement unit. Is it an original tranny, rebuild, or stock replacement. Did the dealership install that tranny? What kind and how are you getting a warranty on the transmission?

dealership installed 1 year ago, I was out of warranty, but negotiated goodwill and only paid $1200 for it. If transmission is installed by dealer and you pay for it or part of it, it caries 3yr/36miles warranty.

> Is it an original tranny, rebuild, or stock replacement.

LOL, there is no such thing as original, and there never was. Its a rebuilt, but dealer does not rebuild, they contract a company to do that so they just swap units. You dont want the original, rebuilds have design modifications that should make it last longer, or so they say

My vette is a 2000 coupe. I really haven't modded much - K&N air filter, Hypertech programmer, low temperture thermostat, and magnaflow exhaust.

IMO there should be more to your good trans luck. afaik SS mode puts a little extra strain on the transmission (well, just makes it work more.) since shifts are supposed to be a fraction of a second faster than normal D5 or D4 mode.

i got my car at 81000 KM ans trans died at 96000KMS and it was in Toronto it's whole life and garage kept.

got her rebuilt for 1900 with an upgraded tq converter and motor mounts and have been riding on glass ever since.

however my car was in bumper to bumper traffic for the first 9 years of its life so i can only imagine the tranny HATED going from 1st to 2nd, to 3rd to 1st... ALLL day long.

no wonder she shat the bag
