How the hell did this happen? *pics*

I washed my car Sunday; didn't notice this. I drove around yesterday, getting in and out many times; didn't notice this. Today I get in to go to work, don't notice it, don't notice it when I get out either. I drive to lunch, get in, don't notice it, get back to work... and then I notice this:

Picture of the side skirt with the door open from the inside

Picture from outside with door closed

I'm pissed and totally confused. Maybe I bottomed out on something? But I think I would have noticed that.

Not on the driver's side. I did scrape a curb on the passenger side underneath my front bumper yesterday. Could that be the cause?

How would a curb get inside his doorframe?

I agree it looks like an impact, but something smashed the skirt
while the door was open.

I wash the car myself. I didn't notice it Sunday when I washed it. I cleaned the interior too when I did it. Really weird.

the skirt is just a round piece of plastic... from the bottom of the car up and under the door.

you can easily hit it on something...

steve look for impact marks under your skirt cuz it looks like you hit something and bent it.

oh and btw ---- you got owned.

What if you accidentally closed your seatbelt buckle between the door & the side skirt? If not, I'd go with "kevin79925" on this one.

Yes you can - but his pictures don't show any impact damage from BELOW.

Reach around 'under your skirt' (so to speak ) - there is no gap where something
could get up from below.

I don't think so.

Have your car up on a lift recently ???? Thats where sometime you see damage from over zealous 'Auto Technicians' after they clamp the lift arms in there too hard or at the wrong angle or something like that

Nah hasn't been on a lift in about 2 months. Last time was when I got the headers put on. I'm gonna get under the car to inspect it tomorrow. Just one more thing i'll add to the body shop's "To Do List"

Was anyone have your keys between ok and mashed?

Anyone else have keys to your car in the period between no-damage and crater-city? Valet parking guy? Any other opportunity to have someone else get your car door open without your being present?

Look under your door to eliminate any “ballistics” that would have happened with the door closed. If the bottom of the door is "clean", it is doubtful that it was a result of road damage.

From the picture:

There looks to be an outer pattern and there are also some fine marks/scratches that are going front-to-rear. (look near the crater.)

IMO, the door was open when the damage was done.

YMMV

No one has had my keys. This really has me baffled. I'm going to get under the car tomorrow when I have full day light to check things out.

Once you get under the car and look at the floor pan *and* bottom of the door, you will have a lot more info to go on.

BTW, I know this isn't under a door, but look at the damage pattern on the rocker panel:

You remember a couple of weeks ago when Dennis tried to run over the rock at Stoddard Wells during our petroglyph hunt near Barstow? Well now it was time to fix the dented rocker panel. Estimates for the repair ran from $1,225.00 down to $670.00. Dennis is far to cheap to pay for work he can do himself . . . especially when it'll cost him less than $350.00 and he gets a new airbrush as part of that cost!

This happens when you try to make a right turn and run into a curb. Since the skirt is flexible/soft... you might not have felt it?

It is on the driver's side. I did rub a curb on the passenger side yesterday. It was just a slight scrape (or so I thought) underneath the bumper. Still not 100% sure of my ground clearance with the springs on now. I'm thinking it could have happened then.

I'm guessing somebody slammed the seatbelt in the door and didn't realize it. We all know that our seatbelts don't retract as they should.

Hmm... but i've been the only one on that side of the car and I would have noticed slamming the seatbelt.

Open your door and look at the bottom, underneath where it meets the sill. Maybe someone tired to pry your door open from the bottom?
