How do you remove the shift boot on a 6 speed?

Tring to install my momo shift knob this weekend, using the instructions posted before. I have a hose clamp, a washer, & the drill stop. Just need to get the factory boot off to make it work.

Thanks

just place your hand around it and jerk it down ... it will release the plastic tabs from within the stock knob. easy

Well, I just installed a momo shift nob and boot and it is a HUGE frustrating job...I have a 97 CL so it might be different then yours...I cut the old boot off with my knife and there is a white plastic lip that holds the boot on mine...There are four screws, two of them are in the front part and the other two are on the back but the heads are in the front as well...I had to take apart my dash all the way across from under the steering wheel, to the glove compartment just to get it on their...I had to modify my boot to and put some holes in it for it to fit also...

Hopefully you dont have as many problems...Dont know if it's different like I said BUT thats what I had to do to our first gen's...

Bump,

Anyone?

I'm not replacing the boot, I just need to lift it up so I can install the knob as per this thread...

I don't know if the plastic trim will break or what..should i pry the plast trim? (the trim that has the TYPE-S shift pattern emblem glued on to it.

ahhh come on and share the wealth of information! This is an easy mod but yet some of us need the help in removing the damn boot itself! Please please, share your intellect! ;-) I'm too lazy to go to the library and pull out the tech manual...

Thanks again, peace!

While Bulla's idea is more professional, I had a simple one. I went to home depot and bought a rubber grommet that fits directly onto the shaft. The stock snap-ring (for lack of a better word) fit right over it and was snug enough to hold it in place. I never had to remove the boot this way..

Give me 20min to take a pic and post it...

Hurry it up ;-) before I head to the library to look at the '01 CLS helms manual (which probably doesn't help).

thanks!

when i changed the boot i did it pretty g-fab but it works and looks like the boot came with the car....just pull out the plastic center console (with the type-s and the 6 gears). twist off the knob so everything is removed (the knob will still be connected to the factory boot and center console). look at the white plastic thing...there are staples that hold the boot in....pull out the staples. now you have to use your imagination and hold the aftermarket boot up to the factory one so you can cut the little tabs into the aftermarket one too (i had to cut about 3 inches off my momo boot because it was too long...then i cut the tabs into it). this is the g-fab part....i used a staple gun to staple the new boot into the plastic ring....use as many staples as you need to make sure the boot fits all the way around the plastic. you'll probably have to bend the staples into the plastic using some pliers because they won't bend around it on their own....after everything is stapled in hook up the boot to your new knob and screw everything in.

p.s. make sure you see how everything looks before you go crazy with the staple gun...you don't want 8 staples in that bia and have the seams look crooked...

I don’t understand what you’re asking here. I thought it was all explained pretty well in that thread about using the factory boot.

As for the silver trim piece, it just lifts right out with some help.
Carefully pry it up with your fingers. Don’t use a screwdriver or you may scratch something.

Bingo! I wanted to know if all I needed to do was to LIFT/PRY that silver trim piece off in order to FLIP THE BOOT INSIDE OUT (invert the boot). I wanted to know before I used force to remove the trim piece...in which the leather boot is stapled to it. Damn, 2 pages worth of comments to find out...but it's worth it! Now I can do that shift boot mod!

PS - Should I just pull straight up by yanking the boot? I mean, use force and pull the boot straight up so that the silver piece will just detach from the base? How much force are we talking about? Is the silver trim just snapped on to the base?

you can pull the boot straight down or take off the entire thing and pull the boot over the knob and use some needle nose pliers to unclip the thing inside

you can just grab it by the leather and pull up while pushing the plastic ring forward.
