How do you feel about this idea for sport shift?

I think if I could get this compromise, I would be perfectly happy with sportshift....
Wouldn't it be great if the sportshift side of the shifter was GATED just like a normal 5 or 6 speed manual!!? I miss more than anything the feeling of yanking the shifter from 5 to 3 and floorong it. Even without a clutch, wouldn't it just be gratifying to be able to move the shifter through the motions? I think it would be awesome.

That would be interesting.

My wish would be for a true 5 or 6 Speed including a clutch with an additional gate position labeled “D” for full auto.

So basically you mean a clutchless stick.

I think Merc or Ford is developing one...

The Ferrari F1 tranny is technically not "clutchless" (I'm not sure about BMW). The car uses a hydrolyic that hits the clutch when you hit the lever. The good part about this tranny is that it doesn't rob power from the engine b/c it's powered by its own generator.

i think that would bad ass. i love driving stick, but sometimes the clutch gets annoying. having the feel of a 5-speed w/o the clutch would be sweet

Or how about this: same shifter as now, except NO AUTO SHIFTING in SS mode. When I want auto, I have D5, D4, and D3 available. When I want manual, I use SS, but it still shifts under certain circumstances. (ie 1-2, 2-1, 4-3 when making turn) I wish SS was completely manual. Oh hell, just give me a stick!

I use SS mode all the time, especially when i am dfrivin I-95 in FL. I also like drivin in gear 1 thru 5 the regualr way. I can hold 1st gear as long as i want and not have it auto matically go up to 2.ITs gets better acceleration that way,. Wish SS would let me go up and down on my own, but at least the regaulr auto part is 5 speed.

RE: Gated shifter/shift/auto options (yes, it would be nice).

Hopefully, we will soon see "Slushboxes" go away. Just about everything from F1 racing eventually ends up in street cars (just a matter of when/not if). Once the early adopters pay back all of the research costs, we will be getting them (I don't know how many years for 30K cars to get them).

My opinion -- fuel prices, etc will drive the manufactures to a electronically shifted manual box like the Ferrari/F1 cars. (The torque converter is a major power waster in our automatics *and* electro-shifted manuals will be more compact, have more gears, and actually cost less to make. Check out the price on most cars with manuals/automatics -- the automatic option costs $$$.

Finally, without a mechanical or hydraulic linkage it makes it easy to add:

1. Paddles on the steering wheel (at 10/2 positions/etc

2. Any combo of goodies where the current shifter/center console is. Wires are much easier to route and add parts to.

I disagree. You guys are trying to turn this car into some kind of sports car or race car that really doesn't gain much except more cost to you the customer and less Acura sales because most buyers don't care for that crap.

Acura is going to do what's best for Acura and the suggested tranny configuration is simply not it.

Yanking the shifter is childish, cheap, archaic, and non-luxurous. Perhaps you're in need of a totally different car, like an Integra.

I wasn't even thinking about a clutchless manual, or any difference at all in the tranny--even if the shifting was exactly the same in terms of speed, firmness, etc., wouldn't just be cool to row the sportshift through the different gates--and by doing so jjust send electronic signals to the tranny--no mechanical connections at all? But, as always, the manual-phobics out there wouldn't get it and they would be intimidated by even having to do anything except push or pull the dinky little shifter up or down. I don't know--for some reason "tapping" the little sportshifter up and down feels kinda whimpy to me. Lemme' yank the shifter from slot to slot--now that would be cool--just like an arcade game!! Just my thoughts.
