How do you determine what your car is worth?

So, when you have a car like the CL-S that's only been out a year, how do you determine what it's worth? IMHO, websites like Edmunds and kelly blue book are only marginally accurate for cars that are several years old. I think they can be WAY off for "new" used cars.

And for those curious - yes I am beginning to consider selling my car. The first step however is to realistically see what it's worth.

Also, how much do mods add to the price? I know probably not very much, but is even half of what the parts and labor cost you accurate?

Price my car:
2001 CL-S
Sundance Gold
22,500 miles
Comptech headers, springs, sways

I'm gonna go do some 'net research now and come back with my own guess.

PIAA 19169

Well, edmunds and kbb don't have ANYTHING listed for our car yet. I guess that's not too surprising. So, I went to autotrader.com and searched the entire country. There are 149 CL-S for sale. Most of the prices seemed WAY WAY WAY too high.

My strategy:
1) I looked only at private sellers (because we all know dealers jack their prices up);
2) I looked only at cars with the mileage listed; and
3) I took an average price of 4 cars with 20,000 miles or more. There were actually 5 cars but one guy is dreaming as he had BY FAR the highest price so I threw him out.

The average asking price was $26,000. Navi was not listed as an option on any of the cars. Doesn't mean they don't have it... but at least I tried to exclude that since I don't have it.

Also, I am assuming that NONE of these cars have any mods considering they weren't listed and most buyers of this car probably aren't gonna mod it!

So, let's assume the average selling price is $24,000. Is that reasonable??
Installed, all my mods cost me about $2200. So, if I add $1100 for mods, that brings me to a SELLING price of $25,100.

Comments??

Agree with your comments regarding the "blue book" sources being way off. Trouble is you'll be competing with dealers who have a big inventory and people will most likely spend 28k on a new car before popping 25k for a used one with 22,000 miles. First year is the toughest regarding that. Half for the mods is fair and private selling will be the way to go. PS: Why are you selling it so soon?

Well the amount you can get for the mods depends on the buyer. If it's someone who was planning to mod the car anyways, the mods will be of more value to them. But, if it's your average driver, the mods won't add any value in his/her eyes and they won't be willing to pay anything for them.

The mods will actually narrow your market. Acura aimed the CL at the 40+ crowd. How many of them want headers, sways, and springs? So why are you selling? It the PDG wearing on you or are you preparing for the stick?

First of all, you should never use Kelley Blue Book as a source. Why? Because most (almost all) dealers and banks don't. You need to use what they use, the NADA Book Value. If you think your car is worth more than the NADA value, bump up the price. But, if the buyer is planning to get a loan from a bank, the bank will only loan up to the NADA Book Value or a maximum value determined by their own financing department.

I tried trading my car in and Two dealers told me that my car is worth $23k. Thats with only 19,000 mi. So the more miles then the lower the price. The average depreciation is between $.30 - $.40 per mi so try and figure it out that way

Right now are the CL-s is running between 23k-25k depending on the amount of miles, and if it has Navi or not..Aftermarket equipmnt for the most part adds no value to a car, in some cases may hurt the value more then help it...so a CL-S with over 20k miles and no navi it would do about 23k to 23.5k in the real world. I know there are a lot for people asking much more, but chances are they will have that car sitting for a long time!!!

i think $23K is too low. around 25-26 is reasonable, IMO. look @ this forum in the black market section, no one is selling less then 24-25k. its true about the mods, the more mods you have the tuffer it will be to sell your car, depending on the location, i.e. mychtp-s car would have been hard to sell due to all the freakin mods he added, unless the price is right that is. but i think you should ask for 25,5-26 and settle for no less than 24,750-25 firm.

You guys must have a lot of cash to be selling the car 1 year after getting it. You lose so much money just by selling the car. I tell myself, if I am going to buy a new car, I will have it for at least 4-5 years. That's why its so important to be a smart shopper.

I checked that site too, but I think the actual paperback book is updated more frequently.

Try calling a couple of banks to see what their loan amount for a 2001 CL-S would be.

From past experience, I don't think this is true. I had a '98 Civic EX coupe. MSRP was about $15,300. I added a bunch of accessories and later bought aftermarket wheels and paid a total of $16,600 for this car. Eight months and 8,000 miles later I sold this car outright for $15,500. I was at the bank with the girl who bought it and they saw that they financed her for the entire $15,500. Now, I never saw the NADA figures for this car, but I have a feeling that the value was not $15,500 considering the MSRP was $15,300 when brand new!!! True, there were some accessories and stuff added on, but that usually adds very little to the price of a used car.

This also proves my point that a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It's all about how much loss you're willing to take. The SELLERS needs to set the standard, not the buyers. I'll never just "give away" a car because of all the rhetoric you hear about cars losing value immediately. It's only true if you're stupid enough to sell the car so cheaply. I don't know what I'm willing to sell the car for. I haven't gotten that far. Chances are, I won't sell it, but it never hurts to explore all your options.

And as for the reason I'm selling it... they are way too many to list. But the color and the 6spd coming out has nothing to do with it!

Guys, I'm not pulling this stuff out of my butt, i buy and sell cars for a living..This is what the cars are doing on the market right now..I get a weekly update of what the all the cars are doing in a large area..trust me on this one...by the way loan value has nothing to do with what the car is worth..everyone in the car industry knows this!! Trust me on this one..

Don't for get that it does really depend on your area and the demand in your area for your car, plus they are right it just depends on the buyer too.
