High Speed Wall

So with a road with no one on it tonight, i did some top end runs.....well I found that the Cl has a huge huge brick wall at 110......the springs/shocks combo I have felt amazing keeping the car in the control where without them it didnt feel as safe....Why does the Cl have such a brick wall at 110....id pass 105 easy and with good acceleration and as it approached 110 i couldnt really pass 110 it just sat at 110 for like a good 2-3 seconds...I dont know if something is messed up with my car and wont pass 110, or theres huge resistance there...BTW the AEM CAI sounded great all the way throughout

Man I have been over 110 a few times and I felt the car want to go more...

It is the 4th gear that is killing us!

At the drag strip, I can redline the 3rd gear around 107-110 MPH, once you are in the 4th the CLS rpm will drop below 4800 rpms (no vtec here) and for couple seconds the accerleation would be almost 0 (hitting the wall) Once you are past 4800 rpms the CL will start picking up accerleration till you hit the rev limiter around 137 MPH!

Yea I dont know what the deal was on my first tranny I could hit 120 not a problem.

Hahha I knew 4th blows, just wondering why 4th blows so badly and why it wasnt geared better...and Im guessing the answer to my dissapointment is get headers

110 in a CL is easy to do, I have done many runs over 110, quite a few at 120, a couple at 130 and one at 140

He didnt' say 110 was hard dude. He said after 110 (aka 4th gear) the acceleration sucked.

Get headers. It really helps alot, I promise.

I was a bit tired when I was reading that, and on the phone, kinda hard to listen to someoen and read at the same time for me....since I only drove the auto once I can't remember 110 in the auto, don't think I made it that fast.

4th gear blows. I've been to 140 and believe me, when VTEC kicks in, in 4th it's kind of exciting.

Mine has pushed past 110 very easliy.

i take it up to 110 in only 4th gear and still have 5th and 6th to go.

i got my 6speed up to 145. maybe that will entice you to see if you can get yours up there hehehehe

I will either use SS or gate up to 3rd and throw it back to D5 just because 4th gear sucks, from here its like climbing a sand dune, headers def help

I was racing a 540i Sport.

We were close until I hit 4th gear.

It looked like he hit a nitrous button on me.

YEP, auto. A quick look at the change in road torque will make it pretty obvious. The aero resistance is going up by velocity squared, but the torque just took a nice cut, and the "driving force" is essentially equal to the torque. Just look up the ratios and you can calc the relative difference in acceleration (the aero effects will swamp out the inertia issues).

If there is some cool air out, and you have some decent mods, it will move pretty well to 130.

It's pretty obvious that the auto's effective road torque is SLASHED when you move into 4th; the gearing is just too tall (ancient news). The only real help is a slight tailwind or some really cold air + full push to the absolute rev limit in 3rd.

As mentioned, the headers, cai, and mods help quite a bit.

And be sure to consider the nice exposure possibilities of "hanging around" at 110 to 130.

Can you say R A D A R + RECKLESS?

And, that’s why CVTs are so nice.
