Don't use SS mode.
Don't push the car near redline.
Try to stay in 5th gear on high ways.
Drive less people.
Drive less.

Performance always comes with a price I guess. At least our car doesn't eat gas like big american cars. It's a very efficient V6.

drive highway I get something like 350-400 on highway (long streches) per tank but only 225-250 in city but I like to floor the car so that takes away

Tricks
Keep the RPM as low as possible
Don't go flying off the line
Any acceleration should be done gradually

On my 800+ mile round trip to Kingston Ontario, I had the cruise control on 70-72MPH the entire way and took it easy when overtaking other cars & trucks.

I got 31.3 on the way up and 32.5 on the way back.
This was back in July and I only had about 2,000 miles on the car at that time.

Buy a car that "isn't" fun to drive. If you have a CL-S, than it's too late to expect good gas mileage!

When going down long gradual hills I often coast in neutral to keep my speed up and the RPMS down. However, that's easier since i don't have an automatic.

"Your mileage may vary, but this seems to getting me an additonal 1 or 2 mpg for me.

At 5000 miles:
1.) I drained the oil.
2.) Cleaned out any sludge, metal filings and other manufacturing gunk from the crank case and oil system with an EnviroClean machine.
3.) Replaced oil with Mobil 1, minus .5 quart
4.) Added a bottle of Tribotech.
5.) Replaced oil Filter with Mobil 1 filter.

I'll probably change the oil again at 5000 miles, but the Tribotech bonds with the metal and is supposed to be good for 60,000 miles.

It's too hard to reign in the joy of flogging the CL-S just to get better mileage.

If you just try to drive smoother sometimes you can practice being a better driver and save gas at the same time, though.

For you guys that coast in neutral going downhill, isn't that bad putting no load on the engine? (i read from the posts somewhere in the past)

I always thought that going down a hill in neutral actually used more fuel.
Think about it, the engine has to actually burn fuel to maintain idle RPM vs. using the engine to compression brake down the hill.

At least this is the way I have been driving my manual transmission cars for the last 17-years.

I’m still trying to figure out this new fangled automatic transmission “feature”.

Thanks for the La gas price link. BTW, one of my family members is getting Prius (I'm not).

There used to be all of the info for manual shift drivers to accelerate in higher gears etc when trying to conserve.

I switch between *fast* mode and old-lady mode depending on Los Angeles conditions.

(Hmmm, sometimes like a cattle shoot here -- Moo.)

You got that right!
That's why I really LOVE this car. When stuck in stop n' go traffic I love the comfortable and quiet environment to listen to music. When the opportunity arises I'm gone with a ROAR!

Yeah, I've been driving manuals all my life and I really don't understand sometimes what the automatic does. like, why does it always switch into 1 whenever i am at a stoplight but i don't really stop. such excessive gear changing is not necessary. and whenever i've going down a hill and let go of the accelerator, the engine rpms go down (like idle) and no engine braking so i'm going really fast. i think this is the thing most annoying to be about automatics, it just flies down a hill. anyone like to tell me what is going on in an automatic?

1) Accelerate only with left foot.
2) Move driver's seat as far away from accelerator pedal as possible.
3) Do not use SS mode
4) Keep car waxed and slick-cheat the wind.
Japanese used this on Misubishi "Zeroes" during WWII. ..hey these cars are kind of Japanese, and go almost as fast!
5) Park and lock car-use bicycle.

I'll suggest one thing that helps out....

when driving in average traffic about 30-45mph, I noticed that my rpms seemed quite high for such slow speeds. Upon shifting to "manual" it showed that I was in 4th (it should be 5th), even though I've been driving same speed for quite a while in this traffic.
After being consciously aware of this, I try to manually shift into 5th to lower my rpms and effectively, increase my mpg's over straight constant traffic runs.

Seems to work quite well for me.

Noticed that in many times while in SS mode, I cannot get it to shift to 5 unless I am above 50MPH!

when in slow city traffic, instead of having the engine do work, shut off the engine, put her in neutral, and get out and push it

well, seriously, better gas helps too... I use 93 all the time, btw is there gas better than 93 and used for normal cars? guess everyone knows the common rule, higher gear = lower rpm = better MPG
