Question HID Inverter/Igniter Failure?

My 2001 3.2 CL is just under 5 years old, and my passenger side HID bulb won't fire up. The guys at the dealership tell me it's not the bulb, and that the "inverter/igniter" (apparently one part on this model) needs to be replaced. They want $583 for parts and labor (I'm almost a year out of warranty)...this seem outrageously expensive to anyone out there? Do I have any other options? I would buy the part myself and attempt self-installation, but I wouldn't have the first clue where to start...is it a big job? Would I need a lift of some kind? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

yea it sounds like a simple part swap, shouldnt' be too hard especially since all the electrical parts have harnesses and sockets that simply plug in. The hardest part would be knowing how and where to access the part that needs replacing. But that's where the good ole Helm's manual comes in.

Ouch! I suppose I was lucky then. This failure occured on my car as well; Roughly 7-8 months ago. I took it to ACURA of South Coast and they replaced it free of charge. Fortunately, I was and actually still am under warranty. But yeah try ebay. And you don't need a lift. The guys there didn't use one. It took them about 35 mins to perform the entire procedure.

Thanks for the replies...a couple of things:

1. Ebay is useless here - they don't have the Acura part, and I have no idea what aftermarket stuff to look for.

2. Forgive my blatant ignorance - Helm's Manual? I definitely need a manual if I'm gonna install this bad boy myself, so some more detail on which one to get would be great

Helm's is the compnay that publishes manuals for our car.

http://www.helmsinc.com

they have different manuals. But you'll probably want just the general service manual. It's a worthwhile investement if you plan on working on your car yourself.

Thanks slyraskal...just ordered one of those (it's www.helminc.com in case anyone else is trying to look at that link)...

I guess all I need now is the part...Anyone know who makes aftermarket igniters for the CL's low beams, and where to get them? Ebay has an HID kit for a 2004-5 TL that includes the ballast and igniter (and it's cheap, which is why I ask), but I have no idea if it would fit in the CL, or if this part is extremely size sensitive...

Thanks for all the help guys!
