It's not that I have anything to add to this nice little bruhaha, but I figured I had to chime in for completeness.

What about some old F1 engines of the early to mid '80s.
1.8L engine cranking out over 1200 HP. Do the caculation to see the HP/L number, kinda scary...

That's freaking 200hp/liter. 6-cylinders and bigger engines have a harder time trying to achieve that goal. That's why American cars for so long have tried to achieve the 100hp/cid. I love the new M3...but even you have to admit it is pricey.

I know I am new to this forum, but this discussion was craking me up during lunch today. Here's another car to think of : The 95 Lotus S4S. It made 300hp from a 2.2 l 4 cylinder. And there are very, and I repeat very, few cars on the road that can even compete with this little 4 banger. Oh by the way, you can pick up a used one for around 40K. Now that's a deal!!!

Double fuckin Vanos 3.2 Litre BMW Engine...wish I had one...you gotta admit BMW engines rule the Acura 3.2 Litre Type-S engine...its the reason why McLaren chose the BMW V-12 in the production of the McLaren F1 supercar. Although Honda makes good engine...

I'm still waiting to hear about the implied plethora of other 3.2ish NA engines that make 260ish hp. I don't particularly care about the .32L NA engines that make 27 hp, or the 32L NA engines that make 2601 hp, or the 1.8L Turbo engines that make 263.44323hp, or anything in between. Say, 2.8L-3.5L NA.

I don't want to beat this to death, but the only way to compare power output among engines is by horsepower per liter. If you need examples, scroll back and start reading.

Actually, I have read this thread from the start, which is why I put the specific output discussion on pause for a sec. Like many fellow members, I am very entertained by the musings here and in countless other threads. I'm actually taking your original statement at face value: 260 hp from 3.2 liters is nothing special.
I suppose one might translate this to mean that the specific output of the 3.2 in the Type S is not particularly noteworthy. I am interested in examining the output range across a displacement range. That shouldn't be too much of a stretch.
- "260 hp from 3.2 liters is actually quite normal"
- I disagree that horsepower per liter is the only way to compare engines. As you say, this has been beat to death on countless forums and both sides have compelling arguments.
- There are probably not a lot of 3.2L engines, but 2.8-3.5 is a reasonable range. Audi, GM, Porsche, BMW, Volkswagen, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Ford, Nissan, Lexus, and Daimler-Chrysler all have a number of engines in this displacement range. How many make 260ish horsepower? If you don't know, and therefore are unable to substantiate your original statement, do you see then what I am questioning? If you did not want to examine the output range, why brandish the 3.2 from the E46 M3 as your example?
