Help W/ Painting Calipers

How easy is it for a rookie to do? The local shop was going to charge me $150 to do it for me. I passed 'cause it seemed a bit high just to have my calipers painted.

lol holy fuck 150 to paint calipers? You could prob get them powdercoated for less than that.

Its not hard. Depends. Do you want to go with the hi temp spray paint or the G2 brush on caliper paint? if you spray them, it dries quicker and the job is quicker but may not look as good or last as long. And you have to take the calipers off, which isnt hard its only two bolts.

If you brush the G2 stuff on I've heard its very glossy and almost like a hard shell, it looks very good and has a lifetime warranty if I'm not mistaken from chipping\cracking etc .. and the calipers can stay on but you have to mask off certain areas. I have a G2 kit sitting in my house waiting to be put on .. I just havent had the time. Also the time is long, I think the directions said it needs 24hrs to cure!?!? not sure how true that is. someone who used it should chime in.

I consider myself a rookie and did it over a weekend earlier this summer. Used the G2 paint system. I really didn't want to go the spray paint route as I was worried about overspray, etc. The kit comes with a spray cleaner, paint and the catalyst. You mix the catalyst with the paint to activate it. You have about 4 hours to use up the paint before it becomes hard depending on ambient temperature.

Hard part is to decide whether you want to do all four calipers at once or just do the fronts on Saturday and the rears on Sunday for example. I opted not to do all four at once but split front and back. What you have to do is divide up the paint into two containers and add only half of the catalyst (activator) - just make a line of the glass jar containing the activator so you don't pour too much in.

I taped some of the rotor off and just used a steady hand. Go slow and you should be OK. After two coats the results look great. You can get G2 on E-bay for about $20.

G2 rocks. I recommend sanding down the calipers for a smoother surface. I did black on my CL-S and red on the girlfriends Sorrento. Very good product. I'm not sure about the curing time either, but I let the cars sit for 24 hrs. just for precautions. It also depends what color your doing. Black only needed twp coats, but the red needed three to look glossy and perfect. I can't host so if you want to pm me I took pics of the red on the girlfriends truck. Goodluck!

Here is the red on my CL... but it does not last for years like powdercoating, so that is why I stripped it off and decided to get them powdercoated.

then the red was just to FLASHY for me after awhile... it attracted alot of attention... and it attracted cops int he area for some damn reason too... So I went with a sleeper look.

there are more pics in my sig... feel free to check them out.

i just do not know how you could put such beautiful rims and expensive Comptech parts on your car and then do something so cheap looking....

FYI: we are making a break through on the powdercoating, we have a FULL set of calipers in rotation now... so once MrSteves are complete, we wil be able to hook up the next person...

Get in line and get ordering... because you could be next to receive your powdercoated calipers in a few weeks...... disassemble yours and slap on the powdercoated ones.. bleed your brakes and BAM.

NO down time

Like I said before, the powdercoated calipers look AWESOME, I don’t argue that.
It’s just that my car is used every day and it’s driven through salt & slush all winter.
It’s not a show car that sits in the garage when it rains or snows.

They look fine to me. I don't feel that it's worth the extra money for me.

I charge a customer 150 once to paint calipers. I took off the entire unit and polished off the dirt witha die grinder so the paint would not be on any residue. Then I applied 2 coats of high temp. Worked out well. Did my own rears the same, will take pics.

How many coatings did you put on it?
For me, I put 3 coatings and after 2 years the paint looks as good as new.

yeah I put about 5.... Make sure you clean the calipers very good or the paint wont stick... I spent about 1 hour on each caliper to make sure i got off all the dirt! its a job that will take the whole day i say wake up arnd 11 take off the wheels put em all on jacks and clean em all first than paint them all put 1 coat every 30mins-1hr depending on the moisture in the air.
