Help - Need help with Speeding

I got pulled over twice by DPS this weekend on a roadtrip. Got a ticket for 80 in a 70. The next day I got pulled over for 55 in a 45. I generally was driving within the speed limit but coming into a small town I didn't slow down quick enough. Just got a warning the 2nd time. Would a radar detector really help me get a heads up?
I'm working on watching my speed but this car is too quick and before I know it I'm going over 70!
And no I can't take defensive driving until Nov 04. Got a ticket in Nov for speeding.

Yes, a radar detector will help you immensely, especially a V1.

I assume radar detectors are legal in TX? I'm in Austin. I went down to the coast for the weekend.

sign up to take dd so long as these tickets are in a diff city than the one you got in Nov. 03. If you do dd, they don't send it in to the state and so your ticket never shows up on the system. You can do the same with deferred ajudication.

As for radars, get a V1. Mine has been great especially for the freeway. I haven't had a ticket in a year now and I drive about 20K miles a year. I speed anywhere from 10-15 mph just to be safe. Trust me, get one and you won't regret it.

yeah usually in NJ they dont bug you for 5-10 over. I have a V1 and it is one of the best purchases I ever made for the CL .. saved me LITERALLY thousands in tickets and surcharges. I've had it since like feb and I can't count how many times I had to hit my brakes when it started going off .. the range is AMAZING. you have about 1mi warning on a straight road.

Here in Florida you have to get a real dick head cop in order to get at ticket for going over only 10 miles over the limit. maybe the cop that gave you a ticket didn't get any ass the night before. He had some pinned up aggression that he had to let go of. Oops and look who just happened to drive by...:pfawk:

Here in Ohio the "9 you're fine 10 you're mine" rule applies. Just got a ticket for 90 in a 65. Ooooops!! I hate tickets! I've been setting the cruise at 73 lately. The cops are like vultures around here this year.

I hate driving thru Ohio which is precisely why I'm flying today to Indy for the US Grand Prix. That 55 for trucks and 65 for cars shit is completely idiotic. The truckers when they pull out, are afraid to go above 56 so it takes MILESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS to get around traffic, espcially when there's only 2 lanes. That and you got that sniper thang goin' on! Actually sniper dude got busted right?

In Texas the state will allow 5mph over the speed limit. From that point on they can and do give tickets. It all depends on the area you are in. Some places are more lenient than others. Get a V-1. It is worth the investment. One increase in insurance rates will be more than the cost of the detector.

Not true. It's not likely, but if the cop want's to be a jackass and write you for 3 over he can.

There is one officer in the DFW area who gives 25 over and still fills a ticket book a day.

Yeah they caught the sniper. Some hiljack with nothing better to do. You're right about the slower speed limit for trucks. Really sucks! I hate having to go anywhere on route 70 where it is 2 lanes.

Wow, how ignorant of me. I've been use to the allowing 14 over for some time as it seems prevelant to most of the southeastern states. Guess I better watch it when travelling abroad as I have done 14 over on my commute between DFW and Richardson, TX many times. :o

When you are driving a back Texas road at the posted 70, it is not unusual to come over the hill and find you are entering a small town where the local police man is waiting to greet visitors who didn't notice that the limit just dropped to 55.

Many of these on Highway 6 between Waco and College Station, Kosse is really bad.

Not true as far as I know .. there is an allowance of +\-5MPH because a radar gun is not COMPLETELY accurate and can be off sometimes as much as 5mph. so you could be doing 50 in a 50 but it could show 55, or 45, or your speedo could be off a few mph etc .. so I know at least in NJ they allow for that. I've heard that you can also ask for a printout of the latest calibration of their radar gun when they stop you if you dont feel it was accurate and if they can't produce the printout right then and there, they can't give you the ticket. and something like if the calibration is older than one month they cant give it to you .. apparently those things have to be calibrated often. but not sure how true that is.

oh yeah, they're legal in NYS. In fact the V1 is undetectable so it doesn't matter anyways if you have it on and you're in Ontario just as long as you're not stupid enough to put it up in the windshield! I do it all the time.

On my way down to Austin last month I got a ticket in Lubbock. The cop was a real dick. I was going 9 over and looking for a gas station. Plus to add to the BS it was 3:30 in the morning. I think the dick just had nothing else to do and knew that I would be back to contest it. A radar detector would've helped for sure.

Speaking of that what is the statue of limitations for a speeding ticket warrant? I would take DD but I'm not sure I can since they've issued a warrant

Current radar guns are much more accurate than that.

.. so I know at least in NJ they allow for that.
Maybe in NJ, not under Texas law.

Urban myth. The cops and judges have been doing this long enough not to fall into a calibration trap.

i think the greatest benefit with having a radar dectetor equiped on your car will help you not to "beat" the cops but to prevent you from speeding too much. to me its a pyschological tool. lots of time my 8500 picks up false x bands and when it starts blaring out that noise i stomp on the brake. sometimes a false k band or ka band and i get on the brake.

My driving habits very. most of the time i drive conservative, so i drive slow and within the speed limit, and sometimes i like to be aggressive and drive over the speed limit. now if i get a speeding ticket while driving aggressively then i dont feel to because i uderstand the risks for it and i am willing to pay for the consquences. But most of the time i drive conservative. but what seems the problem is that my car is too damn fast! it is so easy to accidentally speed, espically in the highway if you just press the gas pedal a little higher you will easliy speed up 10 mph.

yes the detector will give you a better edge over someone without a radar detector but it is not full proof that you will avoid a ticket. if a cop uses laser or instant on or paces you those are the things the radar dectector are completely useless.

so is the detector worth it? YES! i will never drive without one but will it make you invisible on the road? no way! so dont expect it to save your ass all the time!

Sidemarker got that right...

IMO the best thing a detector does is help you pay attention and maybe buy you some braking time. On the East coast cops have gotten smarter over the years, gone are the days of them sitting with their x-bands blaring w/you picking them up miles away. With instant on and laser (vascar was popular in MD a few years back) it becomes a test of reflexes -- who sees who first and whether you get on the brakes before the cop triggers his radar. Often by the time the detector goes off, as we've all found out -- too late!

So, even w/a detector your best bets are still to look out as far ahead as you can, pay attention to unexplained braking ahead of you, keep a sharp eye in the rearview for suspicious approaching vehicles, watch on ramps for cops entering behind you, lift the gas a little going into blind territory (blind curves, hillcrests, underpasses etc), try to stay out of the left lane and keep a screen of traffic between you and the cop.

And when all that fails be curteous to the cop. In eighteen years of speeding I've only gotten one ticket issued for the actual velocity I was going -- knock wood, they've all cut tickets for reduced speeds and no points.

good luck...

i think most the time my ass got save by my 8500,even though i dont pay much attention to the x band, cause its like always false, but usually i go over like 10 on the freeway and sometime 15,but i have never got pull over after i got the 8500,so i think its a very useful tool to have in your car,if you speed like 10mph over in TX,when it goes off it usually gives you enought time to slow down and go back to normal driving speed.
