why wouldnt you want a wider tire?? the 215 are like friggin bicycle tires!!
the wider the contact with the road, the better off the traction will be....hell, if there was a way to fit 275/35/17 on my car, id do it!!!

If you got the money, buy the Toyo T1-S or the Bridgestone SO-3.
If you want good quality tires at the lowest price, you should go with the Kumho ECSTA 712 Supras. I think Whalentires.com is selling them for $89 each.
When I was looking to buy tires, I settled on the 225/45/17 size. There is some issue of aligning wheels with 235/45/17 size since some tire shops may not have equipment to handle these wide tires.
225/45/17 looks pretty good on my CL-S and it does help prevent the wheels from scrapping on the curb.

The Toyo's do also come in the stock size. I had a set ready to be put on if the 235/45 Toyo's did not fit, or had issues. Toyo also has a buy & try policy. You can try them out for 500 Miles, & if you don't like them you can get another set, or a refund.
T1-S and S-03 rule!
225/45/17s are a good setup. Be aware that those will be "smaller" tires than the 215/50/17s. A lot of people do the 235/45/17s b/c that has almost exactly the same radius as the 215/50/17s, so you don't have speedo or odo errors.
The 225/45/17s are about 2% smaller than stock in radius, therefore you will be off 2% on your readings. Example: your speedo shows 100mph, you are actually traveling at about 98mph. The effect of choosing a tire with a smaller radius is that your speedo will read HIGH. Just an FYI. Your speedo and odo display based on # of tire revs per unit time for the factory size tire only. Same # of revs / time but smaller tire = you aren't actually going as fast as the speedo shows and you haven't travelled as far as the odo shows.
dbox, I got the Sumitomos 215 50 17 at Sears for the Tire Rack price of $89.00 per tire. They're right at $140 at Sears. Print out the Tire rack invoice with shippping from the net and take it down to Sears with one of their ads from the paper stating the Sears internet policy. They will argue with saying tire rack price is a wholesale price. But, since they sell to the public I argued that it was an internet retailer and they finally gave in.
These tires are amazing so far : Z rated, 360 treadwear, quiet, great grip and look aggressive.
$500 got lifetime rotation, balancing, roadhazard, and tax.
Good Luck

Do you do a lot of driving? If you do, don't be so easy-ear to these "Toyo T1" and "Bridgestone Potenza S-03" comments. While these 2 are superb tires in every respect, they are at best, prolly 15K mile tires if u are lucky. They are soft rubber and will wear out much quicker.
The price differential between the S-03 and what I currently have (Bridgestone Potenza Re-730 225/45/17) was only marginal and while I could have gotten the S-03, did I really want a tire that would last about half as long as the re-730 with the amount of driving I do? Driving 35K a year in the CL, I don't want to be buying new tires 2-3 times a year...

Can someone explain the treadwear rating for me? I am looking at the Khumos and its treadwear rating is 280. How long is that going to last me? I am going to use it mainly for the spring/summer/fall. I am using my oem tires/rims for the winter.

They stick like glue, not very noisy at all, will last about 20 - 25K which is AWESOME for such a sticky tire!!!!

I'm thinking of trying these next. So far from searching other forums looks good, nothing negative yet and they're not real expensive.
The AVS ES100 radial is Yokohama’s Ultra High Performance summer tire designed to deliver ultra high performance looks and handling to the drivers of sports cars, coupes and sedans. The AVS in the AVS ES100 radial's name identifies that this tire is a member of Yokohama's Advanced Vehicle System flagship family of performance tires.
On the outside, the AVS ES100 features a high-tech silica tread compound molded into a directional tread design with long tread blocks and a continuous center rib to provide traction, responsive handling, and high-speed stability. Its two, wide circumferential center channels and “high angle” lateral tread grooves effectively pump water to the sides of the tire’s footprint to enhance wet traction and minimize hydroplaning. Internally, the AVS ES100 features twin steel belts reinforced by jointless, wrapped nylon stabilizing the tread area to elevate handling and high-speed capability while minimizing weight. The AVS ES100 radial’s polyester cord body and steel wire-reinforced sidewalls help blend ride quality with lateral stability.
Yokohama AVS ES100 tires feature black letter styling and are available in 60-, 55-, 50-, 45-, 40-, and 35-series; H-, V- or W-speed rated sizes for 14" to 18" wheel diameters.
