HELP! HELP! HELP! Trade the CL for a S2K???

So I was on my way to the driving range, and I see a red S2000 sitting in the Honda lot. So I decided to pull over...

It's a 2002 with only 1600 miles on it!!! Perfect condition and they want $29,500.

They offered me 21K for my CL, so the difference is about $8500. I told them they'd need to do better than $8500 to get me interested.

Ok, so what to do??? I love my CL, but I really can't STAND the tranny issues. I guess it's ultimately up to me if I want to give up a BIG car for a rather SMALL car.

But I value input from you guys...

Why not just trade for a 6speed and be able to drive the car all the time? I wouldn't do it.

What would you drive in the winter? S2K is definitely not a winter car...although some idiot in my development thinks it is.

See... I just leased out my third garage to my neighbor, so I did have a spare garage up until 30 days ago!!! I can't just kick him out of the space after he bought a new car.

I'd basically drive the S2k and my wife would have her car. Maybe it's not such a good idea???

here's my 2 cents worth.

1.can you take the hit financially.
2.why the trade. ie.performance vs luxury, highway, city cruiser etc
3.is it really the tranny issue
4.is there a better car than the S2K

i took a 6800 hit on my trade in on my lightning (i had another cl -type-s (stock) my main reason for the trade in was i wanted a truck --but i wanted performance and ford has lots of aftermarket support that won't effect the warrenty where acura dosen't.

at this point in my life i could take the hit as both my kids have moved out. i tell you i have no regrets ,

my decision was probably a little easier as i still have a cl in the driveway.

Remember life goes fast if you got the cash or can handle the payments and driving a S2K will put a smile on your face every time you get in

---than you have made the right decision.

Financially, it's not a big deal. It's nice not having a car payment right now and a car is such a depreciating asset...

Yes, the tranny issue is bothering me. My "fixed" one seems to be having issues. I'm just not liking the feeling of constanly worrying about this. Especially if my wife is driving, and something were to happen.

There are so many variables right now. I really need to talk to my wife when she gets home from work. If she says, NO, then I gotta respect that. She contributes to the financial bottomline.

I'm trying to figure out if $29,500 is a good price...

check the internet or the newspaper ads
also
Make sure you have your pro/con list
getting any big purchase past the wife (there the one's that controls the marriage ) is going to take a sell job, we all know our wives can make a purchase with out any ryme or reason but went it comes down to us guys it takes some work.

put your seller cap on and go for it.
Remember who better to cruise around with than the wife

dbox - Is it your daily driver? People over at Sk2i.com seem to drive their S2Ks an awful lot. Even in the snow...

I drove it for about 30 miles actually. And I SUCK at driving stick, but I didn't stall it once and actually did pretty well IMHO. The car is MAD quick, expecially once it hits 6K rpms... Just hold on!!!

Wife isn't home yet, and the dealership closes at 5, so I doubt we'll be able to go over and have her look at it today. I'm sure she'll shit her pants when she hears I'd like her to go look at a 2-seater convertible. RED, nonetheless...

My buddy has an 02 S2k and drives it everyday, traded a TypeR for it.....he thinks its small, but doesn't have any real issues with it.

I think the S2k kicks ass.

im telling you...the car is amazing! i just can't say enough about it. i have NOTHING bad to say about the car. the s2k is my daily driver(i do live in tx. tho) and so is the cls. both cars are mine but i let my girl keep the cl-s so she and my daughter can go around. we actually went to the dealer looking for a tl-s.
drove the 6 speed cl, i didnt like it at all. the cl just is not a car i want a stick in.
drove the tls, wow, pretty much my cls with 2 more doors...
for the hell of it... drove the s2k, i was sold once i hit 6000prm and cut some corners.

alot of the guys at s2ki.com drive the cars everyday. trust me! the s2000 is something that will keep you smiling day in and day out. i dont even need a radio in the damn thing i love it so much. my girl was against the s2000 BEFORE the test drive...after.... i'll work two jobs before i lose my s2000 good luck Scrib! mine is red also and soon to look like this...

Welp... She wasn't too enthusiastic. She did say however, she'd go look at it. Her first comment was "We'd lose all that money on your CL."

So true. However, if my visit to the dealership on Tuesday yields another tranny problem, it may be a little easier to do.

They did have a '03 Accord EX 6spd, and would let it go for $24,700, about $1500 off sticker. But I really don't think I want an Accord. I didn't even drive it.

You guys crack me up!!!

I think we'll go take a look at it this week.

I said "it's RED" and her eyes lit up. Although, she's not too crazy about the 2-seater. I think we'll go take a look and see.

Any more opinions?

there 's a few things missing here

1. whats your age
2. is there kids involved
3.you said your wife had a car

my point

there is no bigger thrill than having a convertable
what till the test drive
on a nice day to go for the cruise with the wife and the top is down.
or by yourself
remember life is remembered by memories.
and tell her who would buy a four-door convertable

if there is kids (or in possible future)involved than that's where the wife's car come's in.

good luck
i bring my 67 ford cougar (conv) out for the summer and my wife is always taking it out before the cl.

1. 26
2. NO kid(s), YET
3. Yep she has a car...

I'm going to try and drag her over there and take a look see...

According to the boys over at s2ki.com, the price the dealer is listing seems high. There's a Honda dealer in Elmhurst, IL the regularily sells NEW s2ks for under $29K. Which is reallly surprising...

Ideally, the car should come down SEVERAL thousand off the price they want. But again, the car will most likely sell itself, and they won't budge much if at all.

As others have said, you may want to look at the CL 6 speed.

I just ordered one for 29,999....and it is coming from the factory (not a demo model, or even one that has been test driven)

From the invoice:
Order For: '03 Acura CL-S - 6 Sp. Navi
Body Type: Coupe Color: Black
To Be Delivered on or about : 6/26/03

Total Price of Vehicle: $29,999.00
Total Taxable Amount: $29,999.00
State Sales Tax: $ 1799.00
Registration/Title Fee: $ 44.50
Documentary Fee: $ 78.00

TOTAL: $31,921.44

Here is a post from my thread about it:

a six speed Cl is a nice car but isn't in the same league as a s2k

scrib don't do what a lot of us older guy's do as we try to do a lot of stuff know that we couldn't do when we were younger (it not cheap now days).
for myself at 40 i'm in a good position to get what i want as both my kids have moved out. but in my younger years i missed out in a lot of things as priorty's change.

Well the whole s2k thing is on hold for a couple days until I get my CL to the dealer and get the ball rolling on ANOTHER transmission replacement. My wife wants to go check out the s2k, and I think we'll do it on Wednesday.

I'll add a bit to this...

The S2K is a fantastic car, BUT the luxury amenities and size of the CL are soooo nice. But with my ongoing slushbox struggles, a move over to a 6spd CL may be a smart thing to do. Especially if I can get a GOOD deal. We'll drive the S2k this Wednesday and perhaps take a spin out together this weekend to the Acura dealer.

I'll have a better idea of things in a few days.
