Installing OBX headers...

For those of you who have installed them. couple of quick questions.

1. Mostly done from above or below. Will most likely wait until i can get to my dad's house, he has a lift there, but just some input?

2. What's the torque settings on the block?

3. Has there been any fitment problems at all?

4. Anyone heard of them leaking? are you all using the new gaskets?

5. does the kit come with locking nuts or not?

6. any pitfalls to watch out for?

Thanks

Joe

wow going to mod the cls, never thought i'd see the day.

1. You can do the front header from above, the rest from below.
2. Torques setting is in the service manul which I do not hhave it with me now. Use air tools
3. No fittment problem in my case, just make sure to have new O-rings.
4. I use the new non-metalic gasket, no leaks.
5. It comes with bolts and nuts and you re-use the self-locking headers-to-block nuts.
6. make sure to distinguish the front headers fron the rear headers... they are not the same.

Good luck.

Anyone have detailed header installation info??

I am going to be installing my headers with the help of another board member here and i am really curious to hear stories from other members who installed their own headers as well, any tips or tricks to pulling this off, any pictures of the installation process, etc.. it would be greatly appreciated. i plan on doing a major write up and photo shoot of my header installation and i will be glad to post it all once it happens but for now, it would be great if anyone could help me out and give me some info. i have access to ramps, so hopefully that will get the car high enough off the ground to do this, i also have access to a very good tool collection which should include evrything id need.

ive just got these visions in my head of sitting out there for 8 hours, having my car all tore apart and not being able to get it done and ending up having to have it towed to a shop to have them finish the install...

im pretty confident that between myself, Roell, and my other freind who is going to help, we have the ablilty to do this, i jsut want to make it as quick and painless as possible.

thanks for any info

by the way i did do a search but after looking through 7 pages of results, i came up empty, besides someone mentioning that Scalbert did a good write-up but i cant find it...

I don’t have links right now, but YES, Scalbert did a write-up with photos & tool list and I did one too.
Mine didn’t have many photos because I was helping my two friends with the install.

Also…. Jack-Stands will get the car higher then ramps and they’re much easier to use.
Just lift the car from the front and put one under each of the factory lift point behind the front wheels.
Ramps are only going to give you like 6-8 inches of lift.

do you guys have torque specs for me on the block, and any if present on the O2 sensors? I've got the tools and know how, just need hte numbers to shoot for, don't want it to leak, but don't want to f anything up.

From the looks of things, this will be cake (1-2 hrs), kind of like the 56 ford we recently did, about 1 hr total. My last few experiences have trended as such, with the 97ss having a motor crammed under the cowl that needed 1/2 the pumps and accessories removed to take the damn things off.

My brother's 88 GT took about 2.5 hrs for long tubes, and some modifications on the y pipe, this was reasonable.

the 99 t/a took about 4 hrs, not bad

the 97 SS took about 8 hrs, what a b*tch, and only about 5 to get them back off and stock manifold on for resale.

FYI... I merged roo97ss' and jimcol's thread into one. They were basically the same thing.. so it's probably easier to have all of the information in one topic.

This is from the Acura CL FAQ

What are the header torque specifications?
Header to manifold self-locking nuts: 23 lbf-ft
Exhaust Pipe A to Header self-locking nuts: 40 lbf-ft
Exhaust Pipe A to Exaust Pipe (that connects to cat) nuts: 25 lbf-ft

I could not find a write up from a booard member. But, here is a link to the comptech instructions, they are probably the same.
