help with exhaust question
I know I'm a newbie at all this car stuff but one must start learning somewhere right? ok i have a question about exhaust systems. What's the difference between axleback and a catback exhaust? please be specific if you can thx.
depends...the catback will give you about 3-5whp I believe, and will be a tad bit louder...
the axleback is mainly for the sound...so if you're on a budget and just want sound, get the axlebacks

the cat as in the catalytic converter or the piping to make the cat back? because you'll keep your catalytic converter either way. If you meant, could you buy the piping to TURN it IN to a cat-back down the line, then yes, you can. Comptech sells teh piping alone which is called the B-pipe.
If you have a CL-P you will notice an increase in power from a cat back setup due to small exhaust piping. A nice 2.25 inch setup will work nice for you. I think the comptech 2.5 inch setup will make you loose valuable torque, plus you wont make much power to the tip top of the power band. Now if you have an S, you will not see that much improvment over stock if you go with a cat back. Axel back will be perfect for you and will give you a couple horses. If you plan on going all aout and doing headers, intake, and other bolt ons, than do a cat back with a high flow Y and a good 12-22 inch resonator, you will love the difference in sound.
My 03 CLS 6MT with CT i/h/b-pipe/e dyno'd at 236 WHP/201 TQ. The b-pipe added about 3-4 WHP and improved drive-ability across the entire rev range. I didn't notice any lost torque down low, but did feel more TQ higher up.
After installing the S/C, car dyno'd at 305 WHP/262 TQ. The b-pipe probably added 5-8 WHP. When Red Rider finally gets his car dyno'd again at CompTech, we can get a better feel on exactly how much was gained on a 5AT running with the b-pipe. He last dyno'd at 269 WHP running the i/sc/h/e. BTW - we both dyno'd are cars at CompTech.
