Passenger backrest is not heated because of airbag sensors, drivers seat back is heated.

I think it's more likely it's not heated because they didn't want to spend the money; I'm sure they could have made it heated if they really wanted to.

It's a safety feature. The sensors prevent the side impact air bag from deploying if there is a child or small person sitting in the passenger seat. If the passenger in the passenger seat leans forward while you are driving a warning light comes on on the dash.

Do you really believe it's not possible to design/build a seat with both sensors & heater?

Why worry about it? How many times do you sit over there that you need your back warmed up? We drive on the left side of the car so no problems here.

It's a cost/design issue probably, I'm sure many Mercedes have both.

It is totally not a cost issue. The 99 TL has fully heated seats (back/bottom) on both front seats. Reason being, the 99 doesn't have side curtain airbags.

Yea, and the Cost to produce, engineer, safety test, and design in both heater and the air bag and air bag sensors was more than they wanted to spend to keep the CL cost down.
