Heat in Cup Holders.. (from tranny?)

Heat in Cup Holders.. (from tranny?)

Do you guys feel that your cup holders get warm on longer drives??

Initially I thought it was the lightbulb in the center armrest, because I first noticed it at night. But it isn't my cup holders always get warm after a longer drive. If I put my phone in there, or a drink, it'll warm it up nicely (being sarcastic).

Feeling around ther rest of the plastics in that area and everything seems fine. It gets warm even with the cup holders cover opened.

I initially thought that a head shield or something is missing from the tranny, but then that would make other parts warm too..

thoughts?

Doesnt he heat/air blow through there, I though I read that some where with the TL's dont know if its the same with the CL's tho.

try using ur A/C and see if it gets colder...

in the TL....its made so that during the winter...while using heater...it keeps ur drinks warm.....

and during the summer...it keeps ur drinks cool

Yeah mine gets warm too. My drink doesn't stay cold with the AC on. My AC is on 95% of the year.

Uhh, this is a FWD car. The tranny is in front of you in the engine bay, not under your cupholders.

The CL does not have rear vents running through the center console like the TL does so there is no air to keep it warm/cool based on the AC level.

the hump under the cupholders and the rear console is warm and passes on the heat. i had my interior out for a couple of days and noticed it.

Probably the exhaust heat.

The exhaust heat is also what causes the heat in the cupholder. It is not a secret drink-warmer or cooler. My cupholder stays warm inside during the summer and winter because of the exhaust heat. That's also what the small hump in the floor is for, the exhaust piping.

yeah that hump in the floorboard should have been for a driveshaft. stupid fwd.

Its the heat from the catalytic converter.

As for the FWD comment, some cars that are FWD DO have the tranny in the hump

Well with the possible exception of the 2nd gen Legend, that doesn't include any Honda/Acura I know of.

Ya, I suppose your right, the tranny reaching as far back as the cupholders would be a little excessive on the CL. I'm sure it reaches inwards towards the "shifter". But, now that I think of it, the gearing should be located infront of that.. (although it would be nice if it was further towards the center to favor a 50/50 weight balance.
I guess I was thinking too much of my Grand Cherokee's belly when trying to figure out the heat source.
I have to admit, I've never spent any time looking under the CL..
But since the Jeep has not been under warranty for many many many years... and I used to go offroad with it.. I'm more familiar with how it looks below.

A RWD would be pretty awsome.. Someone should take a previous generation RL and throw that power train in the CL. Probably need to jack the sucker up for the drive shaft. ahahah. (I wish I could play the Banjo...).
However, making a RWD conversion and having the RL's auto tranny would be something to laugh at... laugh or cry, i'm not sure.

Its not harder..

Its a matter of space savings.. the tranny in a longitudinally mounted setup robs interior space. My '97 TL for example has more leg room than an equivalentl transverse setup but the foot wells arent very wide.

The main advantages are weight balance (the entire engine sits BEHIND the front wheels) and looks, as there is very little overhang.. making it look like a RWD car.

True, its more complex. The differential is something that some people neglect and dont change its fluid.

if it really bothers you... when the car is COLD!!! Jack the car up & use jack stands.. take a 10mm socket set and climb under the car... should be 4-5 nuts to take off the heat shiled above the cat converter... drop the heat shield (wiggle it out.... get some heat resistance material (self stick type) and tape up the body of the car... put the heat shield back in place... the heat shield is made of tin... tin does not conduct heat, but there is a whole cut into the heat shield for the O2 sensor wiring... right where that hole is, is where your heat problem is coming from.

Didn't you guys know, this is the optional coffee cup warmer. Seriously, I noticed it too in my previous '01 CLS. My current '03 CLS 6MT doesn't have the coffee cup warmer option. I guess the 5ATs tranny's run hotter than the MT's.

He he, it's actually my cellphone warmer.. I don't drink coffee.

I will inspect the belly of the CL at some point before I have Grand Children.. that is my life goal.
