Has anyone ever raced...a train with their car???

Occassionally when I'm rolling to and from NYC on the NJ Turnpike, I find myself pacing the NJ Transit/Amtrak trains that parallel the turnpike on a 2-3 mile stretch (through Secaucus).

One night (on a relatively empty NJTpk), I was rolling at about 80mph only to see the Acela pulling past me so I figure 'what he hell' and floored it. Of course it's a fruitless thing to race a train but, it was something different.

Has anyone else here ever done something like that?

I used to do that sometimes when I was driving to work from Queens to Stamford CT.. The Metro North train follows along I-95 from Westchester to CT... I'd usually get beat as slow cars always got in the way. Once one of the trains got up to 80mph... Guy must have been in a hurry

I think the metro north trains only go about 50, but they will always beat you since they go straight and you will get stuck in lights and traffic.

the metro north train at it's fastest goes 75mph. There is a stretch from exit 18 mamroneck till like just past north ave when you can see the train, and the express is moving at a speed that is fun to keep up with.

As far as the Jersey turnpike I like to race the planes landing or taking off. I had one perfect one time. I was doing around 90 as this plane was taking off, floored it and got up to 145 trying to stay next to it, that was fun. In the XJR, btw.

But as far as the train, it is cool to be on the train and see people trying to catch up on 95 since you got to weave in an out of traffic

That's exactly where I'd pace them driving to work every day. One day during rush hour I paced one doing 80mph as I posted above. Strange because I thought they were limited to 75 too

On occassion I do roll on that stretch of I95 in Conn but I'm almost ALWAYS caught up in traffic.

Another nice stretch on I95 is along the SEPTA line (R3 I think) north of Philly; that piece is several miles long.

From what I've seen Metro North/NJ Transit/SEPTA dont go but so fast. On the otherhand, Amtrak normally flys!!

Yes I tried racing freight trains before, which is fine I guess, as long as you don't try to beat them thru the crossing.

Acela goes ~150mph.

I've run against the Metro line that goes parallel with I66 here in VA during non-rush times. Nearing the Vienna station is interesting because they're slowing down to get into the station so you'll be going like 70mph and keeping pace with it and then you start passing it since it starts slowing down. It's weird.
