Had an Accident

I had an accident with the Acura. I'll say right now I'm truly impressed how well the car held up given the amount of damage to the other vehicle and impact.

I was in the left lane of the 2 north bound lanes. The lady in a '95 Olds 88 left a parallel parking spot and entered the right lane. When I was about 1 to .5 car lenghts off her rear bumper. She entered a U-Turn from the right lane across my lane and into the median (the median is as wide a normal lane). There was NO cross street. I hit the brakes and swerved, but it was too late as she was SO close to me already. (I never even saw her blinker, she claims she had it on, but even the officer said she changed her story too many times to be believable.) I nailed her with my right front into her driver side door. I'd say I hit her around 20-25 mph, on a slight angle. Airbags deployed. WE were both fine except my wrist is sprained and swollen, luckily not broken, as far as I know.

Her whole door was demolished, window shattered, front left 1/4 panel was also damaged. I have minor hood damage, sligh right front 1/4 panel damage and the front bumper is pretty mashed in. Even the right HID light, right at point of impact didn't get damaged. The inside plastic casing is cracked badly but ALL the lights inside operate perfectly. I have the pictures up in my yahoo photos. Link is:

Here's a one photo of the damage for you guys:
(remember, this is a 20mph collision that somehow destroyed the side of here car....)

oh sweet.

thats not bad at all... pretty much same damage i did to MY red CLS.

i took it to a decent body shop and they had it all fixed up and like new in no time (3 days)

they seem to be able to match the red well when they try.

just make sure you let the body shop know that you know what to look for after a cars been painted... and it should give them some incentive to do it right the first time.

also get some referrals on where to take er.

i wouldnt worry... your baby will be fine. how is the driver side quarter?

oh and ya... these acuras hold up great in accidents... as evidenced by my TL and last CLS

I thought the airbags only fired at speeds > 35?
Here are pics from when some lady opened her door into traffic (me). This cost about $1,600. I had it fixed at Bayliss Oldsmobile. My dad knows the guy and they do good work there.

Also, he likes the car. He's retired now and said he'd do everything (go get the car etc)... I get it back and he says he got it to 120 on the Road to Nowhere (222)... Ha! I thought it was the kid who fooled around in the dad's car!

For the photo-philes this was taken with a Kodak DC 3400 in low res mode. Kodak discontimued the DC series in favor of the more 'user friendly' Dx

The airbags deployed, that's gonna throw the repair cost up another 2-3K. Airbags sucks.

Scorpius - I think it's <35mph. They don't deploy at high speeds because they would have no positive effect.

Why would airbags not deploy at high speeds ???? What is the passangers are not buckled up at all.

I'm pretty sure if you're not buckled in you're gonna be fucked by the airbags no matter what speed they deploy at.

Now as to why they don't deploy at high speeds - maybe they do deploy, I'm not sure, but I am positive I've heard that at speeds greater than like 35-40mph, airbags are fairly ineffective at preventing harm... most likely because of the extreme whiplash effect, and the whole "brain coming to a sudden stop" effect of a high-speed collision.
In other words, maybe they do deploy, but they arent' going to help the way they do at low speeds - their purpose.

Glad to hear you aren't injured.

If someone pulled out in front of me like that, then they'd better be prepared for the beating of a lifetime........!

Ya... 5 car pileup in my TL and I spun my red CLS into a guard rail.

:o

fyi... your front airbags will deploy at ANY speed ABOVE 5 MPH.

I've yet to experience the side airbags so I'm not sure what it takes to get them to come out and play

Sorry to hear. Man that sucks. Glad your ok! The car is not that bad. It should be an easy repair. By the damage it looks like the hood, bumber, & right fender will be replaced. Those parts can be pre painted, or painted on the car. These are whole pieces too, so no paint blending which is great because the paint should match perfect.

I think the reason why it looks like the Acura is badly damaged from a 25 mph hit is cause it is designed to buckle like that. aka crumple zones..

IMO
